Place Value to 1,000,000 is a concept typically taught in fourth grade. It is a critical skill that helps students understand the value of places in the ones through millions places\u2014as well as the understanding that every three places (or \u201cperiod\u201d) is separated by commas.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

Students at this age need to build on early place value understanding whenever possible, learning that just like it takes ten \u201cones to make a ten and ten \u201ctens\u201d to make a hundred, it also takes ten \u201cthousands\u201d to make a ten thousand, and so on. Students need to understand how the value of a digit is impacted by its place. 4 ones is ten times more than 4 tens. <\/p>\n<\/p>\n

Helping students learn how to read and write numbers in different ways helps cement that understanding. Writing \u201cwords\u201d is so important as a life skill\u2014and attending to the subtle differences between words like \u201cseventy\u201d and \u201cseventeen\u201d is key.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

Similarly, learning to write in expanded form can cement their understanding of how the \u201cplace\u201d affects the value. Recognizing the difference between 4,005 and 4,050 is essential\u2014so knowing that the first is represented with 4,000 + 5 and the second with 4,000 + 50 can help them show their understanding. <\/p>\n<\/p>\n

To add a \u201ctwist\u201d, you can try giving students numbers out of order ( 50 + 4 + 70,000) to see if they are attending to the values. Similarly, by having more than one number per place (500 + 40 + 30 +2 ) can help students learn to combine amounts in a given place and find total value. This is one way to build the foundation for the addition algorithm.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
