{"id":6851,"date":"2020-06-23T18:19:54","date_gmt":"2020-06-23T18:19:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/theteacherstudio.com\/?p=6851"},"modified":"2021-05-01T23:00:01","modified_gmt":"2021-05-01T23:00:01","slug":"responding-to-literature-thinking-deeper","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/theteacherstudio.com\/responding-to-literature-thinking-deeper\/","title":{"rendered":"Responding to Literature:  Thinking Deeply"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"text-align: center;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\">One thing I have noticed about my students is that they LOVE to listen to me read aloud and are getting better and better about picking just right books and reading with amazing stamina. \u00a0What we really need work on (and I bet I am not alone in this!) is thinking deeply and writing about our reading.<\/div>\n<div><a href=\"https:\/\/www.teacherspayteachers.com\/Product\/Writing-Quality-Narratives-with-Dialogue-for-Grades-3-5-BUNDLE-2810248\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-12880\" src=\"https:\/\/theteacherstudio.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/responding-to-reading-blog-post-header-1000x563.png\" alt=\"Great ideas to help get students thinking deeply about texts\" width=\"616\" height=\"347\" srcset=\"https:\/\/theteacherstudio.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/responding-to-reading-blog-post-header-1000x563.png 1000w, https:\/\/theteacherstudio.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/responding-to-reading-blog-post-header-768x433.png 768w, https:\/\/theteacherstudio.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/responding-to-reading-blog-post-header-1536x865.png 1536w, https:\/\/theteacherstudio.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/responding-to-reading-blog-post-header.png 1640w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 616px) 100vw, 616px\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\">How did we start thinking deeply about texts?<\/h3>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\">We&#8217;ve worked on a number of things like summarizing, looking for key events, making predictions, and trying to master the difference between writing about a TEXT and writing our THOUGHTS about a text. \u00a0This seemed to be a confusing concept for students, so I started working on double entry journals with the students. \u00a0Are you familiar with this? \u00a0Check out the anchor chart I use&#8230;it has really helped me incorporate some better language into my discussions and modeling. \u00a0This was particularly true as I read the book &#8220;Eight Keys&#8221; as our read aloud. \u00a0I would stop and we would have discussions about features we noticed in a text. \u00a0We pointed out interesting language. \u00a0We looked for key events.\u00a0 Finally, we identified problems.<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><a style=\"margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\" href=\"https:\/\/theteacherstudio.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/Phonto-15.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/theteacherstudio.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/Phonto-15.jpg\" alt=\"Helping students be more reflective readers and writers\" width=\"319\" height=\"425\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\">What I noticed is that often the discussion would stop there! \u00a0I had to really probe with the students&#8230;so WHY do you think the author did that? \u00a0Did it REMIND you of anything? \u00a0What is your OPINION about that? \u00a0Over time, more and more students began piggybacking off comments made about our books&#8211;and more and more students began having &#8220;reactions&#8221; to the text as opposed to simply identifying key features of the text.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: left;\">You can even consider brainstorming a list of sentence stems to help students begin that type of writing.\u00a0 Use stems such as:<\/div>\n<ul style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\">I wonder<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\">I predict<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\">A connection I had<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\">I noticed<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\">It was confusing when<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\">I felt<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">You get the picture.\u00a0 This is a great way to scaffold for students and helps avoid them sitting there with a blank page.\u00a0 Try it!<\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\"><\/div>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\">Thinking Deeply and Showing It Off!<\/h3>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\">As I noticed students getting better at this, I asked them to reflect back on the text and to think of one event that they believed to be a &#8220;turning point&#8221; in the book&#8211;an event SO important that the outcome of the book would have been changed had that event not happened. \u00a0I asked students to write summaries of that event (&#8220;from the text&#8221;), create illustrations (we&#8217;ve been talking about seeing books like movies and snapshots in our minds), and then explain WHY they felt the events were, indeed, turning points (their &#8220;thinking&#8221; about a text). \u00a0They had a ball and they turned out pretty cute! \u00a0We don&#8217;t do too many projects anymore, but I do believe it is important to provide students with opportunities to practice high quality work and to create something display-worthy once in a while.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><a style=\"margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\" href=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/-4Ll6osoyCo0\/Uxp4Ek8ug-I\/AAAAAAAAJNQ\/vLSupgWp9sY\/s1600\/Phonto-17.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/-4Ll6osoyCo0\/Uxp4Ek8ug-I\/AAAAAAAAJNQ\/vLSupgWp9sY\/s1600\/Phonto-17.jpg\" alt=\"Helping students be more reflective readers and writers\" width=\"419\" height=\"314\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><a style=\"margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\" href=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/-fGSh1Cg8g4Y\/Uxp33quYzmI\/AAAAAAAAJNI\/0eZ2HWiJLc0\/s1600\/Phonto-16.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/-fGSh1Cg8g4Y\/Uxp33quYzmI\/AAAAAAAAJNI\/0eZ2HWiJLc0\/s1600\/Phonto-16.jpg\" alt=\"Helping students be more reflective readers and writers\" width=\"435\" height=\"326\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\">We hung them outside our lockers and there are tons of students stopping daily to check them out! \u00a0So, after we finished identifying this idea of a &#8220;turning point&#8221;, I wanted to get a sense for how students were able to write about a character. \u00a0I asked them to write to me about one of the main characters in &#8220;Eight Keys&#8221; and to really focus on what they knew about the character. \u00a0 This is where I would love to report to you that all our work on thinking deeper, thinking beyond the text, and reacting to a text paid off. \u00a0And this is where I show you amazing samples of profound things my students said about Elise and Franklin and Caroline. \u00a0This is not the case.<\/div>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\">Where did I go wrong?<\/h3>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\">The horror of it all. \u00a0The writing was atrocious. \u00a0I shuddered. And stewed. \u00a0And grumped. \u00a0Finally, I took responsibility. \u00a0I realized I had really spent NO time modeling for them what I expected in a response. \u00a0I did something thinking and made a chart to help us start to dig a little deeper about characters. \u00a0We talked as a group about all the ways authors help us get to know the characters in their books, and we came up with THIS!\u00a0 And guess what&#8211;this TOTALLY carries over into OUR narrative writing as well!<\/div>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><a style=\"margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.teacherspayteachers.com\/Product\/Writing-Quality-Narratives-with-Dialogue-for-Grades-3-5-BUNDLE-2810248\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/-Rr90INwp1eQ\/Uxp3UbenEnI\/AAAAAAAAJM4\/1DvO-lzxpQo\/s1600\/Phonto-14.jpg\" alt=\"Helping students be more reflective readers and writers by studying characters\" width=\"472\" height=\"354\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\">I asked them if using this chart might help them when thinking deeper and writing about characters and they emphatically agreed. \u00a0They then looked back at their previous writing and realized that, for the most part, they didn&#8217;t tackle ANY of the items on the chart&#8211;with a few exceptions&#8230;namely &#8220;actions&#8221;. \u00a0I quickly typed up the chart and made 1\/2 sheet versions of it for them to glue right into their notebooks as a reference. \u00a0I hung the blue chart on our &#8220;digging deeper&#8221; board.
