Teaching reading, reading lessons, reading interventions, classroom library, just right books, third grade reading, fourth grade reading, second grade reading, fifth grade reading\" width=\"640\" height=\"334\" border=\"0\" data-original-height=\"584\" data-original-width=\"1119\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p><a name=\"more\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Getting Students Talking About Books<\/h3>\n<p>This is exactly what I have been going through with one of my students.\u00a0 She is &#8220;at grade level&#8221; in reading as measured in a number of ways, but I&#8217;ve noticed all year that she does the absolute minimum.\u00a0 Also, she doesn&#8217;t read at home despite her parents badgering her.\u00a0 She loses focus at school as she reads and abandons books often. She CAN read&#8211;she just DOESN&#8217;T read.<\/p>\n<p>Because I think it&#8217;s vital that we are creating readers, not just &#8220;test passers&#8221;, I am not willing to accept that she is holding her own&#8211;because she is being held back by her reading behaviors and habits.\u00a0 If I want her to reach her potential, I need to step in.<\/p>\n<h4>Here&#8217;s what I do with reluctant, capable readers like her!<\/h4>\n<p><strong>I first ask some questions&#8230;<\/strong><br \/>\n<b><br \/>\n<\/b> <b>D<em>o you know what you like?\u00a0 Do you know what you don&#8217;t?<\/em><\/b><br \/>\n<em><b><br \/>\n<\/b> <b>Where do you like to read?\u00a0 Where don&#8217;t you?<\/b><\/em><br \/>\n<em><b><br \/>\n<\/b> <b>Which books that I have read TO you have you enjoyed?\u00a0 Why?<\/b><\/em><\/p>\n<h3>Finding Just Right Books<\/h3>\n<p>And then we begin.\u00a0 We move to my classroom library and we sit together.\u00a0 I start pulling books off my shelf and heaping them in front of her.\u00a0 Her job?\u00a0 To sort them into three piles&#8230;<\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\">&#8220;I am very interested in this book!&#8221;<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\">&#8220;I might be interested in this book.&#8221;<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\">Finally, &#8220;I don&#8217;t think this book is a good match for me.&#8221;<\/div>\n<p>(Let me tell you&#8230;if you don&#8217;t have a classroom library, start.\u00a0 If you don&#8217;t know your collection, start.\u00a0 The success of &#8220;matching students to books&#8221; depends on it!)<\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.teacherspayteachers.com\/Product\/Student-Reading-Goals-Collection-Learning-Targets-for-Focused-Instruction-1923449\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" title=\"Helping students find &quot;just right&quot; books and working to build reading habits, set reading goals, and build reading stamina are an important part of our literacy instruction.
