Third grade reading, fourth grade reading, fifth grade reading\" width=\"640\" height=\"334\" border=\"0\" data-original-height=\"584\" data-original-width=\"1119\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<h3><a name=\"more\"><\/a><\/h3>\n<h3>Writing about characters as we read<\/h3>\n<p>One of the topics we cover throughout the year involves studying &#8220;character&#8221;.\u00a0 This is a part of the Common Core and other state\u00a0standards&#8230;and it&#8217;s such a great way to kick off the year because we can find SO many texts where characters are relatable.\u00a0 Picture books with strong characters, amazing read alouds, book groups where books are chosen because of their strong characters&#8230;all are super easy ways to get the discussions going.<\/p>\n<p>I spend a HUGE amount of time modeling my thinking about characters. This includes introducing character traits, tracing our thinking on anchor\u00a0charts, and&#8211;eventually&#8211;modeling writing about characters.\u00a0 I think by doing all this legwork ahead of time makes it so much easier for students to understand what &#8220;deep thinking&#8221; really looks like. It helps push them beyond those &#8220;just right&#8221; ideas.\u00a0 It&#8217;s also a great way to model that &#8220;evidence from the text&#8221; that is such an important part of helping students write about characters.<\/p>\n<h3>In a nutshell:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>I model thinking and writing about books with picture\u00a0books and read alouds.<\/li>\n<li>Students write about these shared texts as well&#8211;before they write about their own texts.<\/li>\n<li>I have students share their\u00a0writing with each other and practice giving feedback.<\/li>\n<li>The &#8220;gradual release&#8221; is critical so students see what to do, how to do it, and the level of depth I expect in their reflections.<\/li>\n<li>I keep writing samples from earlier in the year for students to look back at later to check for improvement.<\/li>\n<li>We &#8220;study&#8221; samples of student writing to get better at our own.<\/li>\n<li>I collect samples as part of our assessment process.<\/li>\n<li>As the year goes on, students start to write about characters for the books they are reading in book clubs or independently.<\/li>\n<li>We look at all elements of &#8220;character&#8221;&#8230;from traits, to how they change, to their quotations, and more.<\/li>\n<li>Sometimes we write in our notebooks and sometimes on separate sheets that I can keep to use\u00a0as data points.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If you are interested in seeing some of the prompts I use, just CLICK BELOW!<\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.teacherspayteachers.com\/Product\/Common-Core-Pausing-Points-Response-to-Reading-Prompts-Character-Studies-595833\"><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/-2C8UYkgy9-8\/WsPxZ0db-FI\/AAAAAAAAbDU\/_f9lX4JcargPT2zhgqjk1193rfRF416HACLcBGAs\/s640\/pausing%2Bpoint%2Bcharacter%2Bstudies%2Bpin.jpg\" alt=\"Learning to write about characters is important and is a part of the Common Core and other state standards.
