Third grade writing lessons, fourth grade writing lessons, fifth grade writing lessons, writing activities, writing task cards\" width=\"640\" height=\"334\" border=\"0\" data-original-height=\"584\" data-original-width=\"1119\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p><a name=\"more\"><\/a>These are:<br \/>\n<b>1.\u00a0 I can combine two sentences into one improved sentence.<\/b><br \/>\n<b>2.\u00a0 I can add details to simple sentences to make them more interesting and descriptive.<\/b><\/p>\n<h3>Improving and Combining Sentences to Improve Our Writing<\/h3>\n<p>We are starting our\u00a0social issues book clubs, and each &#8220;chunk&#8221; of their reading is going to culminate in a writing reflection&#8211;and I thought it would be a great time to reinforce some of the writing and convention skills we have worked on all year from capitalization to punctuation to sentence fluency.<\/p>\n<p>Today I pulled out the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.teacherspayteachers.com\/Product\/Improving-Combining-Sentences-Sentence-Writing-Task-Cards-Print-Digital-2271491?utm_source=www.theteacherstudio.com&amp;utm_campaign=sentence%20writing%20post%20combining%20sentences\">task cards<\/a> I used earlier this year and brought out several samples that showcased both of these targets.<\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.teacherspayteachers.com\/Product\/Improving-Combining-Sentences-Sentence-Writing-Task-Cards-Print-Digital-2271491?utm_source=www.theteacherstudio.com&amp;utm_campaign=sentence%20writing%20post%20combining%20sentences\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/-TIPBcebMBzM\/WuEKblxmVFI\/AAAAAAAAbQI\/XAkM5NqX8rUlycowd3GOIrGdcXzHa0rpwCLcBGAs\/s640\/Photo%2BApr%2B25%252C%2B6%2B01%2B26%2BPM.jpg\" alt=\"Improving sentence writing by adding descriptive details\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" border=\"0\" data-original-height=\"1200\" data-original-width=\"1600\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: left;\">I started off by doing some modeling and &#8220;thinking aloud&#8221;&#8230;I talked about how &#8220;The dog begged for food,&#8221; simply doesn&#8217;t give us much to visualize or to connect to&#8211;so a writer who includes that sentence isn&#8217;t helping the reader in any way by giving character, setting, feeling, or sensory details.<\/div>\n<h3 style=\"clear: both; text-align: left;\">Modeling Writing:\u00a0 Gradual Release of Responsibility<\/h3>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: left;\">We then looked at my three examples and how different they each are&#8211;but how each paints a different picture for the reader.<\/div>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.teacherspayteachers.com\/Product\/Improving-Combining-Sentences-Sentence-Writing-Task-Cards-Print-Digital-2271491?utm_source=www.theteacherstudio.com&amp;utm_campaign=sentence%20writing%20post%20combining%20sentences\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/-ego71WgHygA\/WuEKbpfHpVI\/AAAAAAAAbQc\/pebtt7mRJugNpE6I-dAIure7R8U7hWMDQCEwYBhgL\/s640\/Photo%2BApr%2B25%252C%2B6%2B02%2B41%2BPM.jpg\" alt=\"gradual release of responsibility model to help students learn how to add details to their sentences and combining sentences to make compound sentences. Third grade writing lessons, fourth grade writing lessons, fifth grade writing lessons, writing activities, writing task cards\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" border=\"0\" data-original-height=\"1200\" data-original-width=\"1600\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: left;\">We then looked at the types of words and phrases that really helped us &#8220;see&#8221; the story in our minds and highlighted them.\u00a0 I sent students off to try some of their own and to then share in partners.<\/div>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.teacherspayteachers.com\/Product\/Improving-Combining-Sentences-Sentence-Writing-Task-Cards-Print-Digital-2271491?utm_source=www.theteacherstudio.com&amp;utm_campaign=sentence%20writing%20post%20combining%20sentences\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/-00a0wDeeiY0\/WuEKclVU3fI\/AAAAAAAAbQQ\/PiaoJkctp8Eu5w4bURLOWYuKxLGYjwZKQCEwYBhgL\/s640\/Photo%2BApr%2B25%252C%2B6%2B03%2B03%2BPM.jpg\" alt=\"Improving sentences by adding sensory details\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" border=\"0\" data-original-height=\"1200\" data-original-width=\"1600\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>After that, we started to tackle those tricky compound and complex sentences.\u00a0 I worked to model different ways to &#8220;add on&#8221; details to sentences and to combine short sentences to help our writing sound more conversational.\u00a0 Again, we used highlighters to find sentences and clauses to help us decide if we needed commas for compound sentences or if we had a clause before our main sentence needed a comma to set it apart. Third grade writing lessons, fourth grade writing lessons, fifth grade writing lessons, writing activities, writing task cards\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" border=\"0\" data-original-height=\"1200\" data-original-width=\"1600\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: left;\">Again&#8230;back to some partner writing and sharing to practice this.\u00a0 After only about 25 minutes, I had done two &#8220;mini minilessons&#8221;, modeled writing 6 sentences, highlighted teaching points, and students had written 4-6 sentences of their own.\u00a0 Not a bad kick off to the writing we are about to do with our book clubs!<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<h2>Task Card Update!<\/h2>\n<p>Due to popular demand, I have added a digital component to this resource.\u00a0 You can use the print cards OR send the task cards digitally!\u00a0 This is a great way to help with the gradual release!
