Opinion writing can be a really fun way for students to express themselves. Once it is time to move to a more formal five paragraph opinion essay, some students really struggle. This resource is geared to helping teachers and students \u201csee\u201d the components of a simple opinion essay, study a simple essay, plan an essay using either a graphic organizer or the included flip book, and then actually draft the complete essay.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/p>\n

The opinion writing graphic organizer is geared toward helping students recognize the five paragraphs and what needs to go into each one\u2014almost like a formula. Once they understand this, teachers can push students into more sophisticated writing. <\/p>\n<\/p>\n

To start, helping them understand the basic formula and the importance of stating a clear thesis (\u201cclaim\u201d), having three solid reasons, the evidence to back them up, and a strong conclusion is really very doable for most intermediate students.
