With the right approach, we can make them accessible, relatable, and even enjoyable for students. In fact, some don&#8217;t even think of fractions as &#8220;numbers&#8221; (see <a href=\"https:\/\/theteacherstudio.com\/fractions-are-numbers\/\"><strong>THIS POST<\/strong><\/a> for more about that!). Before jumping into teaching strategies, let\u2019s address some of the most common misconceptions our students may have:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Numerator\/Denominator Confusion<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Students often think the numerator and denominator are separate numbers rather than part of a whole. Some students reverse them and need coaching with this.\u00a0 I like to say &#8220;out of&#8221; (3 out of 4 pieces) to help students understand this.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Improper Fractions Are \u201cWrong\u201d<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Many students view improper fractions as mistakes because they don\u2019t fit their idea of a \u201cwhole.\u201d Solid number line work can help with this.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Fractions Are Harder Than Whole Numbers<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: The shift from whole numbers to parts often feels like an entirely new language. If students don&#8217;t spend enough time with concrete models, this may present itself as a problem.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em><b>Try This!<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Use real-life examples, like slicing a pizza or dividing a bag of candy, to show how numerators and denominators work together to represent parts of a whole. Do as many &#8220;think alouds&#8221; as you can when talking about fractions!<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><b>Strategies to Build Confidence and Mastery<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.teacherspayteachers.com\/Product\/Fraction-Bundle-10-Hands-On-Fraction-Activities-and-Resources-3280070?utm_source=www.theteacherstudio.com&amp;utm_campaign=2025%20jan%20fraction%20post%20fraction%20bundle\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-14714\" src=\"https:\/\/theteacherstudio.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/2024-fraction-post-fraction-folding-667x1000.png\" alt=\"Using visual models to teach fractions\" width=\"340\" height=\"510\" srcset=\"https:\/\/theteacherstudio.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/2024-fraction-post-fraction-folding-667x1000.png 667w, https:\/\/theteacherstudio.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/2024-fraction-post-fraction-folding-768x1152.png 768w, https:\/\/theteacherstudio.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/2024-fraction-post-fraction-folding.png 800w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 340px) 100vw, 340px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: center;\"><b>Visual Models and Manipulatives<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Making fractions tangible is key to understanding.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Use fraction strips, pie charts, or number lines to visually represent fractions.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Encourage students to manipulate these tools to compare fractions, find equivalencies, and practice operations.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Example<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Show students two fraction strips\u2014one for \u00bd and one for \u00bc. Ask them to align the strips to see how many \u00bc pieces fit into \u00bd.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><b>Try This!<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Provide students with printable fraction circles or paper strips that they can cut and manipulate during lessons.\u00a0 If you have plastic or even digital manipulatives, they work well too! I can&#8217;t stress enough how important it is for students to see, touch, and move &#8220;pieces&#8221; as they learn how to represent fractions.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: center;\"><b>Real-World Connections<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.teacherspayteachers.com\/Product\/Real-World-Math-Task-Open-Ended-Problem-Solving-Challenge-Set-6-Print-Digital-3798671?utm_source=www.theteacherstudio.com&amp;utm_campaign=2025%20jan%20fraction%20post%20open%20set%206\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-14715\" src=\"https:\/\/theteacherstudio.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/2024-fraction-post-fraction-activities-667x1000.png\" alt=\"real world fraction problems and problem solving tasks\" width=\"340\" height=\"510\" srcset=\"https:\/\/theteacherstudio.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/2024-fraction-post-fraction-activities-667x1000.png 667w, https:\/\/theteacherstudio.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/2024-fraction-post-fraction-activities-768x1152.png 768w, https:\/\/theteacherstudio.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/2024-fraction-post-fraction-activities.png 800w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 340px) 100vw, 340px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fractions become less intimidating when they\u2019re tied to everyday experiences.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Talk about design and how people use fractions to create patterns (see the image above or CLICK HERE)<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Use cooking recipes to teach measurement conversions (e.g., \u201cHow many \u00bd cups equal 2 cups?\u201d).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Relate fractions to sharing, like dividing a class snack or splitting a group project workload.<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">My personal favorite involves talking about pizza or cakes or pans of brownies.\u00a0 These are simple for students to visualize and are VERY real to them!<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Don&#8217;t forget about fractions of a set!\u00a0 Even looking at the colors of M&amp;M&#8217;s in a snack size bag or using math counters to show &#8220;how many out of how many&#8221;! (6 red out of 15 total, and so on).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em><b>Example<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Have students calculate how to double or halve a simple recipe.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.teacherspayteachers.com\/Product\/PBL-Math-Problem-Solving-Project-Holiday-Cookie-Math-Task-Print-and-Digital-1597440?utm_source=www.theteacherstudio.com&amp;utm_campaign=2025%20jan%20fraction%20post%20cookie%20challenge\"><strong>THIS PROJECT<\/strong><\/a> is a super fun way to let students explore that!\u00a0 Or make a class trail mix and create your own recipe!<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: center;\"><b>Scaffolded Lessons<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Break down concepts into manageable steps as you do your fraction planning.\u00a0 This sequence is one possible path you could take.\u00a0 I try to spiral my lessons so I continue to circle back to concepts that have already been taught.<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Start with visualizing, drawing, and folding simple fractions (e.g., \u00bd, \u2153, \u00bc). This can also involve\u00a0<strong>identifying<\/strong> fractions from a picture, but don&#8217;t let that be your only early step!<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Move to equivalencies (e.g., 2\/4 = \u00bd). This may involve more paper folding, more manipulatives, and more &#8220;real world&#8221; examples.\u00a0 For example, most students can visualize that 1\/2 of a pizza is the exact same amount as 2\/4 of a pizza.\u00a0 Be very careful to not introduce the algorithm of multiplying the numerator and denominator too early.\u00a0 Let students discover that on their own&#8211;with your coaching, of course!<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Make sure you expose students to fractions on number lines as well.\u00a0 There are MANY misconceptions that happen with numbers lines, so you want to take your time with this.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/theteacherstudio.com\/fraction-number-sense-and-math\/\"><strong>Here&#8217;s a blog post about fractions on number lines<\/strong><\/a> that can help if this is a challenge for your students.<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Practice operations with fractions (e.g., adding\/subtracting fractions with like denominators, then different denominators).\u00a0 Over the years, one thing I&#8217;ve noticed is that many students struggle with converting between mixed numbers and improper fractions, and vice versa.\u00a0 Don&#8217;t jump to that algorithm too soon!\u00a0 Play with manipulatives until students can see that 15\/4 can be reorganized into 3 wholes and 3\/4 of another one.\u00a0 I promise&#8211;if you take your time here, the lightbulbs will go off!<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: center;\"><b>Interactive Resources and Games<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Engaging activities make fractions fun while reinforcing concepts.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Use online tools like fraction apps or virtual manipulatives.\u00a0 Practice counting &#8220;unit fractions&#8221; until you get to a whole and beyond.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Incorporate board games or card games that involve fractions.\u00a0 <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.teacherspayteachers.com\/Product\/Comparing-Fractions-and-Fraction-Sequencing-Game-Fraction-Battle-1659070?utm_source=www.theteacherstudio.com&amp;utm_campaign=2025%20jan%20fraction%20post%20fraction%20battle\">Here&#8217;s one of our favorites<\/a>!<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.teacherspayteachers.com\/Product\/Comparing-Fractions-and-Fraction-Sequencing-Game-Fraction-Battle-1659070?utm_source=www.theteacherstudio.com&amp;utm_campaign=2025%20jan%20fraction%20post%20fraction%20battle\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-14716\" src=\"https:\/\/theteacherstudio.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/2024-fraction-post-fraction-games-667x1000.png\" alt=\"fraction games\" width=\"340\" height=\"510\" srcset=\"https:\/\/theteacherstudio.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/2024-fraction-post-fraction-games-667x1000.png 667w, https:\/\/theteacherstudio.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/2024-fraction-post-fraction-games-768x1152.png 768w, https:\/\/theteacherstudio.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/2024-fraction-post-fraction-games.png 800w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 340px) 100vw, 340px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Present fraction review experiences in a gamified &#8220;puzzle&#8221; format.\u00a0 Check out this amazing activity where students REALLY have to apply what they&#8217;ve learned!
