Building Relationships<\/strong>:<\/h4>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">What this does is so powerful.\u00a0 Students realize you care.\u00a0 They realize you were listening.\u00a0 Their engagement in the learning community skyrockets.\u00a0 How can you continue to build on this all year long?<\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\"><em>Greet students in the morning by commenting on something you know about them.\u00a0 &#8220;How did your tournament go?&#8221; or &#8220;Did you get to go fishing this weekend?&#8221; really show that you care.<\/em><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\"><em>When you notice things in the news that relate to your students&#8217; interests&#8211;comment!\u00a0 &#8220;Hey&#8211;I saw the Brewers won their fifth in a row!&#8221;<\/em><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\"><em>When you see something (like a book, an article, etc), you can let students know. &#8220;I saw this new book in the library and it looked like just the type of mystery you like!&#8221;<\/em><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\"><em>Know your students&#8217; families. Being able to ask about their new puppy, or how their brother with the broken arm is doing shows you care.<\/em><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\"><em>You get the point!<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-14510\" src=\"https:\/\/theteacherstudio.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/interest-survey-blog-post-image-2-667x1000.png\" alt=\"Make connections with students to build trust and community \" width=\"264\" height=\"396\" srcset=\"https:\/\/theteacherstudio.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/interest-survey-blog-post-image-2-667x1000.png 667w, https:\/\/theteacherstudio.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/interest-survey-blog-post-image-2-768x1152.png 768w, https:\/\/theteacherstudio.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/interest-survey-blog-post-image-2.png 1000w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 264px) 100vw, 264px\" \/><\/p>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>3.\u00a0 Classroom Management<\/strong>:<\/h4>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">I&#8217;ll keep this simple.\u00a0 When students feel cared about and feel a part of a community, they are better behaved.\u00a0 If students are given engaging lessons and activities that meet their needs and likes, they are better behaved.\u00a0 End of story. I&#8217;m not saying that getting to know your students will <strong>eliminate<\/strong> behavior issues.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve been in the classroom for more than 30 years.\u00a0 I&#8217;m not a fool.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">That being said, I will tell you with<strong> 100% certainty<\/strong> that students who trust you, who believe you care, whose basic needs are being met, and who feel a part of the classroom community will be more successful in your classroom.<\/p>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: center;\">Using Interest Surveys to Collect Data<\/h4>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Finally, it&#8217;s clear that I think we need to be getting to know our students, and some of it can be done super informally.\u00a0 However, I also think it&#8217;s great to do some up-front work in the first weeks of school to get the ball rolling.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">I use surveys for that!\u00a0 I have a number of different surveys that I sprinkle in&#8230;all while helping students see that I truly want them to be HONEST with their responses.\u00a0 If they don&#8217;t like math&#8211;I want to know.\u00a0 If reading is a challenge, I want to know.\u00a0 That culture of being open and honest gets established on the first day of school.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">However, GIVING the survey is only part of the process.\u00a0 As with all classroom &#8220;assessment&#8221; work, if we collect data and don&#8217;t use it, we have wasted our time.\u00a0 If you choose to do some surveys to start YOUR year, make sure you consider how you will make the most of it.<\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Organize Data<\/strong>: Use spreadsheets, lists, or charts to manage responses.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Identify Trends<\/strong>: Look for common interests to group students effectively.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Apply Insights<\/strong>: Integrate survey findings into lesson planning with engaging projects and activities.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Revisit Findings:<\/strong>\u00a0 If you learn something noteworthy but need more information, collect it!\u00a0 If you see something you want to address later, find a way to track it so that information doesn&#8217;t disappear.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: center;\">Here are a few interest surveys that I use!<\/h4>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">To begin, I use these digital slide surveys as a part of my &#8220;introduction to technology&#8221; in the first week of school.\u00a0 I use this time to talk about our Google Drive, how we access files, how to add text, how to drag items, how to use the shortcuts like &#8220;copy paste&#8221; or &#8220;undo&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">I never use ALL the slides in this resource, and I use them a few at a time to collect information and really process on it.\u00a0 For example, I might use this slide one day:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-14483\" src=\"https:\/\/theteacherstudio.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/Slide7.jpg\" alt=\"student interest surveys\" width=\"412\" height=\"309\" srcset=\"https:\/\/theteacherstudio.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/Slide7.jpg 960w, https:\/\/theteacherstudio.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/Slide7-768x576.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 412px) 100vw, 412px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">The next day, I might get into more specifics about academics with a survey like this!
