Getting students to read &#8220;just right books&#8221;<\/h2>\n<p>This is SUCH an important job that we, as teachers, have.\u00a0 We all have those students who pick Harry Potter when they should be picking A to Z Mysteries.\u00a0 We all have those students who start a book and abandon it almost immediately.\u00a0 Learning how to pick a \u201cjust right\u201d book is a valuable skill that needs to be explicitly taught to many students.<\/p>\n<p>We absolutely MUST give students time to read independently chosen or \u201cself-selected\u201d books to read every single day.\u00a0 30 minutes should be the minimum for grades 3-5.\u00a0 We can use that time to confer with students and do other things&#8211;but students must be reading books they choose every day.\u00a0 That means we have to teach them how to pick the right books!<\/p>\n<p>Start the year by brainstorming with your students on how to pick a good-fit book.\u00a0 Model how to preview a book&#8211;and create an anchor chart with them to display.\u00a0 Stuck?\u00a0 Here are a few ideas to help!<\/p>\n<p><strong>When I \u201cpreview\u201d a book I will . . .<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Read the \u201cblurb\u201d on the back<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Look at chapter titles<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Read a few pages<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Consider the recommendations of others<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Consider the reading level<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Look at the text size, length of chapters, and number of pages<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Think about how interesting the topic is to me<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Looking for more help with helping your students find those &#8220;just right&#8221; books?\u00a0 <strong><a RESOURCE<\/a> <\/strong>might give you some ideas!<\/p>\n<h2>3.\u00a0 Book Talks<\/h2>\n<p>Another powerful back-to-school reading activity is doing short but frequent book talks.\u00a0 There are so many benefits to \u201cadvertising\u201d books to students.\u00a0 We want students to be able to find those \u201cjust right\u201d books, and sometimes a little boost is just what they need!<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Consider the following!<\/strong><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Pick a day of the week to share 5-10 books with the class.\u00a0 Read the \u201cblurb\u201d on the back or share some of the chapter titles.\u00a0 Get them excited!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Do a book \u201cbrowse\u201d.\u00a0 Put bins of books on different desk groups and let students browse and write down titles of books that look appealing to them.\u00a0 (Want a recording sheet for that?\u00a0 <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.teacherspayteachers.com\/Product\/Readers-Workshop-Forms-Posters-Lessons-and-More-Help-for-Independent-Reading-767169?utm_source=www.theteacherstudio.com&amp;utm_campaign=back%20to%20school%20post%20readers%20workshop%20resource\">CLICK HERE<\/a><\/strong> for that and other great forms!)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">In addition to your book talks, have STUDENTS do book talks!\u00a0 Either have them meet in small groups to share about what they are reading, use an app like FlipGrid to record little videos, or even have them create a short slideshow or other \u201cad\u201d for their book.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Showcase different series books by reading the first and then highlighting the other books in the series.\u00a0 Sometimes reading all the titles or placing a bin of them in a special place builds excitement.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">When you get new books (like from a Scholastic order, garage sale, etc), ask students to check them out for you and report back.\u00a0 I love saying things like, \u201cJustin&#8211;I know you are a hockey fan, and I was wondering if you could help me out by reading this and telling me if it\u2019s a good fit for our library\u201d or something to that effect.\u00a0 This is a GREAT way to motivate reluctant readers.\u00a0 Then you can even say, \u201cThis book is highly recommended by Justin\u2026.Justin who do you think the ideal audience for this book is?\u201d which gives all sorts of feels to that child.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Place book holder easels up around the room to showcase books students might like.\u00a0 I have the rule that if they take a showcased book, they have to find a REALLY good replacement to put in the stand.\u00a0 Kids LOVE to have that job!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Visit your school library and find ways to get students to learn your collection.\u00a0 Try a scavenger hunt where they have to look for different authors, have them find books that hide on the bottom shelves and aren\u2019t often seen, or have them bring their \u201cBooks I Want to Read\u201d list down and add new titles.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">There are so many other ways to get students pumped about reading the books in your room.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.teacherspayteachers.com\/Product\/Readers-Workshop-Forms-Posters-Lessons-and-More-Help-for-Independent-Reading-767169?utm_source=www.theteacherstudio.com&amp;utm_campaign=back%20to%20school%20post%20readers%20workshop%20resource\"><img 521px\" \/><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>4.\u00a0 Back-to-School Reading Anchor charts<\/h2>\n<p>Part of getting students ready for back-to-school reading is making sure they have access to the information they need to be successful.\u00a0 This is where anchor charts come in!<\/p>\n<p>There are a number of anchor charts I have up all year&#8211;and some that I just have up at the beginning as we get started.\u00a0 Check out a few that I use!<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>How do I preview a book?<\/li>\n<li>What will stamina look like in our class?<\/li>\n<li>When is it ok to abandon a book?<\/li>\n<li>What do I do if I don&#8217;t know a word?<\/li>\n<li>And so many more!\u00a0 (These headers are a part of my independent reading resource if you want to see more.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.teacherspayteachers.com\/Product\/Readers-Workshop-Forms-Posters-Lessons-and-More-Help-for-Independent-Reading-767169?utm_source=www.theteacherstudio.com&amp;utm_campaign=back%20to%20school%20post%20readers%20workshop%20resource\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-13194\" Working on Stamina<\/h2>\n<p>One of the charts you see is all about stamina.\u00a0 Like with many things, some students are able to read with stamina from the beginning.\u00a0 They almost seem \u201cborn\u201d to read!\u00a0 I was lucky to be one of them&#8211;and perhaps you were as well.\u00a0 Unfortunately, this is not the case for all students, and we need to find ways to help them build that stamina as we plan our back-to-school reading lessons and activities.<\/p>\n<p>One of the most important things we can do is explain to students how important stamina is&#8211;and help scaffold that for them.\u00a0 Learning how to minimize distractions, pick \u201cjust right\u201d and engaging books, and learning how to regroup when focus or meaning is lost is key.<\/p>\n<p>At the beginning of the year, we need to make expectations clear and help students recognize and minimize distractions.\u00a0 Read for shorter amounts of time to start, and then celebrate as you extend the time!<\/p>\n<h2>6.\u00a0 Creating a Culture of Reading<\/h2>\n<p>One of the best things we can do for our students is to help them understand how important reading is.\u00a0 First of all, we want them to understand that reading is necessary&#8211;but also entertaining!<\/p>\n<p>When we take all of the ideas above and add more&#8211;we build a culture where reading is valued and that culture is established.<\/p>\n<h4>So let me give you a few more back-to-school reading hints!<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Model your own reading!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Get excited when you get a new book or find new reads.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Have books everywhere&#8211;at all levels!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Similarly, find books with engaging characters where all your students are represented<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Make sure students know that you are there to coach them when they need it.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Find ways to celebrate books!\u00a0 Design advertisements or do other fun projects where students can showcase their favorites!\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/theteacherstudio.com\/spring-bulletin-board-project-writing\/\">CLICK HERE<\/a> for one example of that!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">In addition, celebrate when students finish books&#8211;and when you finish books as a class.\u00a0 I keep a running list of all the books we read together.\u00a0 After a chapter book, we often celebrate with a treat or activity that fits the book.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Help students feel good about the books they choose by helping those who struggle to find books.\u00a0 I love hanging out in my reading area with students and helping them build their lists.\u00a0 It\u2019s great 1:1 time and gets them off on the right foot.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Use your status time to build positive energy about reading.\u00a0 Things like \u201cWow!\u00a0 Annika!\u00a0 You read so much yesterday, can you tell us about why that book has you so hooked?\u201d or \u201cMiguel&#8211;you are almost done with that entire series.\u00a0 WOW!\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Get. A. Lot. Of. Books.\u00a0 Seriously!\u00a0 Try garage sales.\u00a0 eBay. Thrift stores.\u00a0 Donations.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Gift students books if you can.<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Make personalized bookmarks with inspirational reading quotations.<\/li>\n<li>Help students see that reading is complicated&#8211;but that we can break it into different learning targets to work on.\u00a0 We all have strengths and all have areas to grow!
