Helping students see that writers tap into both when they create is eye-opening for some students.\u00a0 We talk about so many things&#8230;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>When an author writes a story with a basketball player as the main character, what do they need to do?<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>If an author wants to write a historical fiction book set during the Civil War, what do they need to do?<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>In order to write a story with a BAT as a main character, what does the writer need to do?<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>That&#8217;s right&#8211;<strong>RESEARCH<\/strong>! In order to make our writing believable, we need to make sure we create an accurate setting and situation.<\/p>\n<p>This is something I talk about all year, but I like to do a little something related to it in the fall with the book Stellaluna.\u00a0 I tie it to our feature article writing unit where I choose <strong>bats<\/strong> as my &#8220;watermelon topic&#8221;.\u00a0 We work together to narrow it down, talk about &#8220;slants&#8221;, and eventually craft a quality piece of writing after we do our research.<\/p>\n<p>To complement this, we read Stellaluna and look for ways that the author, Janell Cannon, incorporates REAL bat facts into her story to make it more complete and real.\u00a0 We come up with a pretty good list every year!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/theteacherstudio.com\/product\/stellaluna-activities-and-lesson-plans-fiction-and-nonfiction-reading-lessons\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-12492\" src=\"https:\/\/theteacherstudio.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/Photo-Oct-15-3-24-39-PM-799x1000.jpg\" alt=\"Anchor charts and teaching tips for Stellaluna\" width=\"370\" height=\"463\" srcset=\"https:\/\/theteacherstudio.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/Photo-Oct-15-3-24-39-PM-799x1000.jpg 799w, https:\/\/theteacherstudio.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/Photo-Oct-15-3-24-39-PM-1597x2000.jpg 1597w, https:\/\/theteacherstudio.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/Photo-Oct-15-3-24-39-PM-768x962.jpg 768w, https:\/\/theteacherstudio.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/Photo-Oct-15-3-24-39-PM-1227x1536.jpg 1227w, https:\/\/theteacherstudio.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/Photo-Oct-15-3-24-39-PM-1635x2048.jpg 1635w, https:\/\/theteacherstudio.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/Photo-Oct-15-3-24-39-PM-scaled.jpg 2044w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 370px) 100vw, 370px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>The Research Behind the Story of Stellaluna<\/h3>\n<p>One really cool feature of Stellaluna is that the author includes a few pages of &#8220;Bat Notes&#8221;
