As you know, by the time students reach upper elementary, our problem-solving expectations shift.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li data-start=\"423\" data-end=\"591\">We ask them to solve multi-step problems.<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"423\" data-end=\"591\">We expect them to explain their reasoning.<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"423\" data-end=\"591\">Finally, we want them to apply strategies flexibly and make sense of complex situations.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"593\" data-end=\"642\"><em>But what happens when the foundation isn\u2019t solid?<\/em><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"644\" data-end=\"861\">What happens when students can multiply\u2026 but don\u2019t really understand what multiplication represents?<br data-start=\"744\" data-end=\"747\" \/>When they can compute\u2026 but freeze when the unknown \u201cmoves\u201d?<br data-start=\"806\" data-end=\"809\" \/>When they rely on keywords instead of relationships?<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"863\" data-end=\"1001\">This is where Cognitively Guided Instruction (CGI) becomes more than an instructional approach. The research behind CGI began by studying how young children naturally develop mathematical thinking.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1220\" data-end=\"1241\">But here\u2019s the truth:<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1243\" data-end=\"1294\">The benefits of CGI don\u2019t &#8220;expire&#8221; in second grade.\u00a0 In fact, they become even more important in grades 3\u20135 \u2014 especially when students are struggling.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1395\" data-end=\"1563\"><em><strong>At its core, CGI is about understanding problem structure and listening carefully to student thinking. It\u2019s about using that thinking to guide next instructional steps.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1565\" data-end=\"1640\">And that kind of responsive teaching is <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">exactly what intervention requires<\/span>.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_11941871\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11941871\" style=\"width: 1000px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.teacherspayteachers.com\/Product\/CGI-Word-Problems-CGI-Story-Problems-Bundle-of-All-4-Operations-Grades-2-4-15540142?utm_source=www.theteacherstudio.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026%20CGI%20intervention%20blog%20post%20CGI%20bundle\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-11941871 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/theteacherstudio.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/4-1-1000x667.png\" alt=\"Students working on problem solving\" width=\"1000\" height=\"667\" srcset=\"https:\/\/theteacherstudio.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/4-1-1000x667.png 1000w, https:\/\/theteacherstudio.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/4-1-768x512.png 768w, https:\/\/theteacherstudio.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/4-1-800x533.png 800w, https:\/\/theteacherstudio.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/4-1.png 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-11941871\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Talking through strategies is such an important part of CGI math!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3 data-start=\"1647\" data-end=\"1707\">Why Upper Elementary Students Struggle With Word Problems<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"1709\" data-end=\"1779\">By the time students reach upper elementary, gaps become more visible.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1781\" data-end=\"1811\">You might notice students who:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"1813\" data-end=\"2088\">\n<li data-start=\"1813\" data-end=\"1871\">\n<p data-start=\"1815\" data-end=\"1871\">Automatically subtract whenever they see the word \u201cleft\u201d<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1872\" data-end=\"1923\">\n<p data-start=\"1874\" data-end=\"1923\">Add numbers together because they see two numbers<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1924\" data-end=\"1968\">\n<p data-start=\"1926\" data-end=\"1968\">Struggle when the unknown isn\u2019t at the end<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1969\" data-end=\"2040\">\n<p data-start=\"1971\" data-end=\"2040\">Can compute accurately but can\u2019t explain why their answer makes sense<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2041\" data-end=\"2088\">\n<p data-start=\"2043\" data-end=\"2088\">Shut down when faced with multi-step problems<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"2090\" data-end=\"2125\">Often, the issue isn\u2019t computation.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2127\" data-end=\"2142\"><strong>It\u2019s structure.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2144\" data-end=\"2385\">Many students have learned procedures without deeply understanding how quantities relate to one another. They\u2019ve practiced <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>result-unknown<\/strong><\/span> problems <strong>(5 + 8 = <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">?<\/span>)<\/strong> repeatedly, but haven\u2019t had consistent exposure to change-unknown <strong>(5 + <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">?<\/span> = 13)<\/strong> or start-unknown <strong>(<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">?<\/span> + 8 = 13) <\/strong>situations.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2387\" data-end=\"2525\">When those structures reappear in upper elementary \u2014 especially inside fraction problems or multi-step situations \u2014 the foundation cracks. And as you can imagine, this truly is the foundation of algebraic thinking in later years.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"2532\" data-end=\"2579\">How CGI Becomes a Powerful Intervention Tool<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"2581\" data-end=\"2690\">When we use CGI principles in upper elementary, we shift from \u201creteaching steps\u201d to rebuilding understanding.<\/p>\n<h4 data-start=\"2692\" data-end=\"2734\">1. Diagnose Thinking Before Correcting<\/h4>\n<p data-start=\"2736\" data-end=\"2828\">Instead of modeling immediately, we give students a carefully structured problem and listen.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2830\" data-end=\"2842\"><strong>For example:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2844\" data-end=\"2956\">A class collected 248 cans. They collected 63 more cans on Friday. Rebuild Conceptual Foundations Through Structure<\/h4>\n<p data-start=\"3480\" data-end=\"3587\">In upper elementary, intervention often focuses on more practice. More worksheets. The &#8220;some&#8221; fish is difficult to model&#8230;so students may need coaching.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p data-start=\"3723\" data-end=\"3763\"><strong>Even in grades 3\u20135, intentionally using:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"3765\" data-end=\"3871\">\n<li data-start=\"3765\" data-end=\"3791\">\n<p data-start=\"3767\" data-end=\"3791\">Start-unknown problems<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"3792\" data-end=\"3812\">\n<p data-start=\"3794\" data-end=\"3812\">Compare problems<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"3813\" data-end=\"3871\">\n<p data-start=\"3815\" data-end=\"3871\">Equal groups problems with different unknown positions<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"3873\" data-end=\"3885\">Strengthens:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"3887\" data-end=\"4002\">\n<li data-start=\"3887\" data-end=\"3909\">\n<p data-start=\"3889\" data-end=\"3909\">Algebraic thinking<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"3910\" data-end=\"3954\">\n<p data-start=\"3912\" data-end=\"3954\">Understanding of operation relationships (and when to choose which operation!)<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"3955\" data-end=\"3985\">\n<p data-start=\"3957\" data-end=\"3985\">Flexibility with equations<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"3986\" data-end=\"4002\">\n<p data-start=\"3988\" data-end=\"4002\">Sense-making<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"4004\" data-end=\"4193\">When students analyze structure <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">instead of chasing keywords<\/span>, they begin to see the relationships between quantities. Elevate Strategy Discussion<\/h4>\n<p data-start=\"4236\" data-end=\"4300\">Upper elementary standards demand explanation and justification.\u00a0 We constantly ask students to &#8220;show what you know&#8221; or &#8220;explain your thinking&#8221;.\u00a0 Do we do enough to give them the experiences and languages to actually do that? Do we model OUR own thinking and explanations?<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4302\" data-end=\"4330\"><strong>CGI supports this naturally.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4332\" data-end=\"4453\">When students share different strategies \u2014 decomposing numbers, using compensation, modeling with a number line \u2014 we can:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"4455\" data-end=\"4577\">\n<li data-start=\"4455\" data-end=\"4474\">\n<p data-start=\"4457\" data-end=\"4474\">Compare methods<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"4475\" data-end=\"4499\">\n<p data-start=\"4477\" data-end=\"4499\">Highlight efficient strategies (The goal is to gently nudge students toward more efficiency! We don&#8217;t want them to have to carry around pockets full of counters forever!)<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"4500\" data-end=\"4550\">\n<p data-start=\"4502\" data-end=\"4550\">Connect strategies to properties of operations<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"4551\" data-end=\"4577\">\n<p data-start=\"4553\" data-end=\"4577\">Make structure visible<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"4551\" data-end=\"4577\">Even model our own strategies and language<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"4579\" data-end=\"4635\"><strong>Students aren\u2019t just getting answers.<\/strong> They\u2019re reasoning&#8211;and reasoning is what the standards expect.\u00a0 It&#8217;s also where things break down for many of our students.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"4687\" data-end=\"4733\">Intervention Isn\u2019t About Lowering the Level<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"4735\" data-end=\"4797\">Sometimes intervention is mistaken for \u201csimplifying\u201d the math.\u00a0 But strengthening understanding doesn\u2019t mean lowering expectations.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4868\" data-end=\"4946\">It means strengthening the foundation so students can access grade-level work.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4948\" data-end=\"4966\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Grades 3\u20135 demand:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"4968\" data-end=\"5091\">\n<li data-start=\"4968\" data-end=\"4998\">\n<p data-start=\"4970\" data-end=\"4998\">Multi-step problem solving<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"4999\" data-end=\"5022\">\n<p data-start=\"5001\" data-end=\"5022\">Algebraic reasoning<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"5023\" data-end=\"5054\">\n<p data-start=\"5025\" data-end=\"5054\">Justification of strategies<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"5055\" data-end=\"5091\">\n<p data-start=\"5057\" data-end=\"5091\">Deep understanding of operations and how\/when to use them<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"5093\" data-end=\"5187\"><strong>CGI supports all of that because it centers on relationships, structure, and student thinking.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"5194\" data-end=\"5240\">A Different Way to Think About Intervention<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"5242\" data-end=\"5341\">When students struggle in upper elementary, our first instinct may be to show them the steps again.\u00a0 And again.\u00a0 And maybe one more time.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"5343\" data-end=\"5388\">But what if instead we slowed down and asked:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"5390\" data-end=\"5510\">\n<li data-start=\"5390\" data-end=\"5439\">\n<p data-start=\"5392\" data-end=\"5439\">What do you think is happening in this problem? (Or &#8220;What DO you know about this problem?)<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"5440\" data-end=\"5475\">\n<p data-start=\"5442\" data-end=\"5475\">How are these quantities related? (&#8220;What do you think is happening? Can you visualize what is happening?&#8221;)<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"5476\" data-end=\"5510\">\n<p data-start=\"5478\" data-end=\"5510\">What does your strategy show us? (&#8220;How can you get started with something?\u00a0 Did it work?\u00a0 What else can you try?&#8221;)<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"5512\" data-end=\"5550\"><strong>When we listen first, we teach better.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"5552\" data-end=\"5636\">CGI isn\u2019t about &#8220;dumbing down&#8221; instruction. It\u2019s about making instruction responsive.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"5638\" data-end=\"5774\">And in upper elementary classrooms \u2014 where reasoning, flexibility, and problem solving are essential
