October is such a fun time in the classroom. The weather is changing, the leaves are turning, and students are full of energy! Some schools lean into Halloween while others prefer to keep things fall-focused\u2014and either way, I\u2019ve got you covered. Today I\u2019m rounding up a few of my favorite fall activities that bring a little seasonal fun into the classroom without losing sight of meaningful learning.<\/p>\n

\n

Engaging Fall Activities For Everyone!<\/h2>\n

Not every school celebrates Halloween, so I like to make sure I always have plenty of fall activities that can be used no matter what your district policies are. Pumpkins, leaves, and even friendly monsters are all perfect for keeping students engaged while staying school-appropriate.<\/p>\n

Every year I would have students bring in fall leaves and we would do leaf rubbings.\u00a0 I was always SHOCKED at how few had ever done this!\u00a0 We would read books about why leaves change color and would write paragraphs with topic sentences and transition words and hang those all up with our leaf rubbings.\u00a0 It looked gorgeous!<\/p>\n

Fall Word Problems and Estimation Jar<\/strong><\/h3>\n

When I say differentiated\u2014I mean it! These fall word problems<\/a> are designed for grades 3\u20135 and come in a variety of formats so you can pick what works best for your students. I love using them in math journals, small groups, or even as \u201cproblem of the day\u201d warm-ups. The seasonal contexts (like apples, leaves, and pumpkins) make the math feel relevant without being holiday-specific.<\/p>\n

I love having these ready–because even if I don’t put them in my plans, you KNOW you will have fast finishers who need a little something!\u00a0 You can print them for their math notebooks or send them digitally.<\/p>\n

\"Fall<\/a><\/p>\n

Piggyback your problem solving with a fall-themed estimation jar!\u00a0 If you haven’t used estimation jars before, you are missing a GREAT opportunity for math thinking, math talk, and a little bit of fun!\u00a0 Fill your jar with something “fall-ish” and let the fun begin.\u00a0 If you want it all done for you, check my “Estimation Station” resource<\/a>. Once you try, you’ll see how this fall activity can be used in different ways all year long!<\/p>\n

Monster Math Problem Solving (Algebraic Reasoning)<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Now this one is a blast! These monster-themed problem-solving task cards<\/a> use silly monsters to hook students\u2014but the math thinking is the real star here. From multi-step word problems to balancing equations, kids get practice with algebraic reasoning in a way that feels like a game.<\/p>\n

I love setting these up as math stations or using them for partner challenges. And since the monsters are fun but not \u201cHalloween-ish,\u201d they work perfectly all fall long. My students ADORED these, and when they finished, they wanted me to make more! Again, you can print them to use as task cards or send them digitally.<\/p>\n

Seasonal Readalouds – Stellaluna<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Stellaluna<\/span> is a PERFECT book to use at this time of year because there is SO much you can do with it.\u00a0 (I have an entire blog post about it right here<\/a>!). If you’re weaving in some fall read-aloud magic, you\u2019ll definitely want to check it out.<\/p>\n

I’ve designed a helpful guide if you want a no-prep Stellaluna resource<\/a> that guides students through comparing and contrasting fiction and nonfiction, deepening comprehension, and using graphic organizers to respond thoughtfully to the story\u2014without any extra planning on your part. It\u2019s a perfect fall activity for when you want something engaging, flexible, and meaningful but meets your content needs as well.<\/p>\n

For Those Who Do Celebrate Halloween<\/h2>\n

If your school does recognize Halloween, it can be fun to add in just a little bit of spooky fun. The key is keeping the activities meaningful while still tapping into the excitement your students are already feeling.<\/p>\n

Halloween Math and Writing (Low-Prep, Print + Digital)<\/strong><\/h3>\n

This Halloween resource<\/a> has been a favorite of mine for years. It\u2019s packed with math and writing activities that are festive without being overwhelming. Students can plan a Halloween party on a budget, try out themed word problems, and even do some creative writing with Halloween-inspired prompts.<\/p>\n

The best part? It\u2019s truly low prep, which is a lifesaver during such a busy time of year.<\/p>\n
