\u00a0it’sAs teachers, we know one of the most powerful ways to help students become stronger readers is by giving them <\/span>time to read<\/span><\/i>. Unfortunately, many schools seems to be doing away with independent reading in the name of \u201cScience of Reading\u201d or other curriculum initiatives, without true understanding of these initiatives. (Super grateful that my district always valued independent reading!)<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

But that\u2019s only part of the equation. To truly foster growth and independence, students need more than time\u2014they need <\/span>support in choosing the right books<\/span><\/i> and opportunities to reflect on who they are as readers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

That\u2019s where intentional teaching comes in. I thought I\u2019d share some thoughts about what I\u2019ve noticed and learned in my billion years of teaching.\u00a0 I’ll show you the Science of Reading connection as well so don’t worry. Let\u2019s roll!<\/span><\/p>\n

The Power of Choice + Guidance = “Just Right” Books<\/b><\/h4>\n

Students don\u2019t magically know how to pick books that are a good match. Left on their own, they might choose books that are too easy, too hard, or just not a good fit for their interests or reading habits. And while it\u2019s perfectly fine (and even encouraged!) to read \u201crelaxed reads\u201d or try a challenging text from time to time, the bulk of their reading should be spent in “just right” books<\/span>\u2014books that stretch their thinking without overwhelming them.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This is truly such a life skill\u2013being able to be reflective and self-assessing is something they will use for the rest of their lives.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

That\u2019s why I created my <\/span>Getting Ready for Reading<\/b><\/a> resource\u2014to help teachers explicitly teach students how to choose just-right books, reflect on their own reading behaviors, and develop habits that support strong, independent reading all year long. What Does the Science of Reading Tell Us About Independent Reading?<\/b><\/p>\n

The <\/span>Science of Reading<\/b> isn\u2019t just about phonics and decoding (misconception alert!). While foundational skills are essential\u2014especially in the early years\u2014there\u2019s much more to reading than sounding out words.<\/span><\/p>\n

For students in grades 2\u20135, <\/span>language comprehension, vocabulary development, fluency, and background knowledge<\/b> become increasingly important. And one of the best ways to grow these skills is simple: let students read books that are the right fit <\/span>and<\/span><\/i> that they want to read.<\/span><\/p>\n
