It\u2019s the perfect time to introduce the kind of thinking, collaboration, and perseverance you\u2019ll expect from your students moving forward. That\u2019s why I believe in starting the year with meaningful, <em data-start=\"1046\" data-end=\"1067\">fun math activities<\/em> that go beyond rote computation.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1102\" data-end=\"1265\">Let me explain more about why your first <em data-start=\"1134\" data-end=\"1145\">math task<\/em> should be more than just review\u2014and how one powerful resource has helped ME launch math instruction with intention and engagement. By the way&#8211;if you aren&#8217;t ready to start thinking about back to school yet, just pin one of the images to revisit later!<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"1272\" data-end=\"1309\">Start Strong with Rich Math Tasks<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"1311\" data-end=\"1688\">A well-designed <em data-start=\"1327\" data-end=\"1338\">math task<\/em> does more than practice skills. It encourages students to think critically, explore different strategies, and communicate their thinking clearly. Starting the year with a low-floor, high-ceiling challenge invites all students in\u2014no matter their confidence level\u2014and helps you observe how they reason, organize their work, and collaborate with peers.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1690\" data-end=\"1770\">And when those tasks are built around <em data-start=\"1728\" data-end=\"1756\">real-world problem solving<\/em>? Even better. When that &#8220;real world&#8221; task is something that is meaningful to them?\u00a0 Golden.\u00a0 (No more &#8220;Johnny bought 24 watermelons&#8230;&#8221; problems because&#8211;no, indeed, Johnny did NOT!)<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"1777\" data-end=\"1842\">A Fun Back-to-School Math Task to Get Students Thinking<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"1844\" data-end=\"2265\">One of my favorite ways to kick off the math year is with the <a class=\"cursor-pointer\" target=\"_new\" rel=\"noopener\" data-start=\"1906\" data-end=\"2082\"><strong data-start=\"1907\" data-end=\"1965\">Open-Ended Teamwork Challenge: Back-to-School Shopping<\/strong><\/a>. This fun math project asks students to help \u201cMila\u201d (named after a former student, I must admit!) shop for school clothes on a budget\u2014choosing from different stores, weighing deals, and stretching her money as far as it will go.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2267\" data-end=\"2315\"><em>Why do I love this math task so much? Because it\u2026<\/em><\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"2317\" data-end=\"2725\">\n<li data-start=\"2317\" data-end=\"2400\">\n<p data-start=\"2319\" data-end=\"2400\">Combines addition, subtraction, and multi-step thinking in an authentic, MEANINGFUL context<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2401\" data-end=\"2472\">\n<p data-start=\"2403\" data-end=\"2472\">Encourages creativity, decision-making, and <em data-start=\"2447\" data-end=\"2470\">accountable math talk<\/em><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2473\" data-end=\"2534\">\n<p data-start=\"2475\" data-end=\"2534\">Is fully differentiated with multiple levels of challenge<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2535\" data-end=\"2583\">\n<p data-start=\"2537\" data-end=\"2583\">Allows for collaboration OR independent work (whole class, small group, partners, centers, you name it!)<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2584\" data-end=\"2656\">\n<p data-start=\"2586\" data-end=\"2656\">Includes extension tasks and discussion prompts that deepen thinking and takes all the prep concerns away for you<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2657\" data-end=\"2725\">\n<p data-start=\"2659\" data-end=\"2725\">Has a digital option, making it easy to assign to different groups<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"2727\" data-end=\"2926\">Students aren\u2019t just solving math problems\u2014they\u2019re <em data-start=\"2778\" data-end=\"2808\">thinking like mathematicians<\/em>. They analyze, justify, reflect, and adjust. This is the kind of math classroom culture I want to build from day one.\u00a0 In fact, by starting the year with tasks that are differentiated, it helps build the culture for that as well!<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2727\" data-end=\"2926\"><a href=\"https:\/\/theteacherstudio.com\/product\/pbl-math-problem-solving-project-back-to-school-shopping-print-and-digital\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-11938323\" src=\"https:\/\/theteacherstudio.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/shopping-challenge-pin-2-667x1000.png\" alt=\"Differentiated math tasks can help students choose their own level of challenge!\" width=\"383\" height=\"574\" srcset=\"https:\/\/theteacherstudio.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/shopping-challenge-pin-2-667x1000.png 667w, https:\/\/theteacherstudio.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/shopping-challenge-pin-2-768x1152.png 768w, https:\/\/theteacherstudio.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/shopping-challenge-pin-2-800x1200.png 800w, https:\/\/theteacherstudio.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/shopping-challenge-pin-2.png 1000w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 383px) 100vw, 383px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"2933\" data-end=\"2991\">More Than Math: Setting the Stage for a Growth Mindset<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"2993\" data-end=\"3188\">This activity also gives students permission to try, to revise, and to persist\u2014without fear of making mistakes. That\u2019s what makes it such a powerful tool for introducing <em data-start=\"3163\" data-end=\"3179\">growth mindset<\/em> in math.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3190\" data-end=\"3419\">Some students will overspend. Others will forget an item. Some will go back and find better deals. And that\u2019s <em data-start=\"3300\" data-end=\"3309\">exactly<\/em> the kind of productive struggle we want to normalize. These aren\u2019t just math lessons\u2014they\u2019re mindset lessons.\u00a0 Is there a single right answer?\u00a0 NO.\u00a0 Is there more than one way to solve it?\u00a0 YES!\u00a0 What better way to start the year than to help students learn this!<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"3426\" data-end=\"3473\">Bring Math to Life Through Accountable Talk<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"3475\" data-end=\"3681\">If you\u2019ve ever struggled to get students talking meaningfully about math, this is a great way to practice <em data-start=\"3581\" data-end=\"3604\">accountable math talk<\/em> from the first days of school.\u00a0 This isn&#8217;t something that should be a &#8220;unit&#8221; or minilesson.\u00a0 It needs to become a way of &#8220;being&#8221; in your classroom.
