After more than 30 years in the classroom, I\u2019ve learned that a few smart moves early on can make the entire year smoother, more engaging, and a lot more joyful\u2014for both you and your students.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"617\" data-end=\"811\">Whether you\u2019re a brand-new teacher or have been at it for years, I\u2019ve pulled together some of my favorite strategies (and classroom-tested resources) to help you kick things off with confidence. That\u2019s why I focus on building relationships and classroom community from the very first day.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1027\" data-end=\"1069\">Here are a few simple ways to get started:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"1070\" data-end=\"1431\">\n<li data-start=\"1070\" data-end=\"1146\">\n<p data-start=\"1072\" data-end=\"1146\"><strong data-start=\"1072\" data-end=\"1092\">Morning meetings<\/strong> are a powerful way to establish routines and connect.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1147\" data-end=\"1292\">\n<p data-start=\"1149\" data-end=\"1292\">Use <strong data-start=\"1153\" data-end=\"1187\">math tasks with a social twist<\/strong> (like my back-to-school problem-solving challenges) to get kids collaborating while easing into content.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1293\" data-end=\"1431\">\n<p data-start=\"1295\" data-end=\"1431\">Try \u201cget to know you\u201d interviews, interest surveys, and student-created name tents to start learning about your students as individuals.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"1433\" data-end=\"1585\">Want ready-to-use tasks that build community <em data-start=\"1481\" data-end=\"1486\">and<\/em> get kids thinking?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.teacherspayteachers.com\/Product\/Teaching-Teamwork-8-Back-to-School-Cooperative-Activities-1406702\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-11520\" src=\"https:\/\/theteacherstudio.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/cooperative-back-to-school-activities-cover.jpg\" alt=\"cooperative learning, teamwork lessons, third grade, fourth grade, fifth grade, back to school, back to school activities\" width=\"428\" height=\"428\" srcset=\"https:\/\/theteacherstudio.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/cooperative-back-to-school-activities-cover.jpg 960w, https:\/\/theteacherstudio.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/cooperative-back-to-school-activities-cover-500x500.jpg 500w, https:\/\/theteacherstudio.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/cooperative-back-to-school-activities-cover-768x768.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 428px) 100vw, 428px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Speaking of building community&#8230;I seriously love this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.teacherspayteachers.com\/Product\/Back-to-School-Bulletin-Board-and-Pennant-Glyph-Project-2000332\">back to school pennant project<\/a>&#8211;and it&#8217;s WAY more than a craft project.\u00a0 While doing it, my students learn about my expectations for work quality as we build an anchor chart together.\u00a0 As we work, we get to know each other and start to build classroom community!<\/p>\n<p><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/8nrxHSSxMqY\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h3>Don&#8217;t Wait to Start Teaching!<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"1646\" data-end=\"1809\">It can be tempting to spend the first week doing only community-building and review, but students are ready (and eager!) to dive into meaningful learning early on.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1811\" data-end=\"1861\">Some things I always prioritize in the first week:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"1862\" data-end=\"2240\">\n<li data-start=\"1862\" data-end=\"1962\">\n<p data-start=\"1864\" data-end=\"1962\"><strong data-start=\"1864\" data-end=\"1882\">Launching math<\/strong> with real thinking\u2014open-ended tasks, number sense work, and math talk routines.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1963\" data-end=\"2133\">\n<p data-start=\"1965\" data-end=\"2133\"><strong data-start=\"1965\" data-end=\"1997\">Getting books in kids\u2019 hands<\/strong> on day one. Whether they\u2019re browsing your classroom library or hearing a great read-aloud, early exposure builds excitement and habits.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2134\" data-end=\"2240\">\n<p data-start=\"2136\" data-end=\"2240\"><strong data-start=\"2136\" data-end=\"2156\">Starting writing<\/strong> in low-pressure ways like journaling, quick writes, or collaborative anchor charts.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Growth Mindset<\/h3>\n<p>Check out this video preview for my <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/theteacherstudio.com\/product\/growth-mindset-activities-and-lessons-growth-mindset-posters-bulletin-board\/\">growth mindset toolbox<\/a><\/strong>&#8230;I use this a TON at the beginning of the year, but then I follow up all year long to keep students really focused on mindset.\u00a0 Students need the language to effectively talk about growth mindset in the classroom, the books they read, and the world they live in.\u00a0 See what you think!<\/p>\n<p><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/_3T3ST2WEYU\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h3>Getting Ready for a Year of Reading<\/h3>\n<p>There are so many amazing books out there, but I love to start my year with &#8220;Fish in a Tree&#8221;.\u00a0 It is an amazing story with great characters and TONS to talk about.\u00a0 You know I love to push students, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.teacherspayteachers.com\/Product\/Fish-in-a-Tree-Novel-Study-1989573\">this Fish in a Tree Novel Study resource<\/a> is no different.\u00a0 I give you everything you need from teaching points to writing opportunities&#8211;all focused on getting students to think deeply and prove their ideas with text evidence. Packed with clear, scaffolded reading targets, it\u2019s perfect for introducing students to self-assessment and reflection routines during the first weeks of school. You might begin by displaying 2\u20133 learning goals (like \u201cI can identify the main idea\u201d or \u201cI can ask questions about the text\u201d), then guide students in selecting one they want to focus on for the day. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"relative -mx-px my-[-0.2rem] rounded px-px py-[0.2rem] transition-colors duration-100 ease-in-out\">Pair it with reflection time\u2014either verbally during a share-out, or in writing\u2014so they can recognize their progress and set actionable next steps. Here are a few resources I use in those early weeks to help students learn to TRY, to work together, and to realize that challenge can be fun! this as a bulletin board that doesn&#8217;t take up much space but this challenge can be done without a display as well.\u00a0 It&#8217;s GREAT for helping students realize that there can more than one answer to problems, that organizing work helps, and that there are different strategies that can be used when tackling computation tasks.\u00a0 My students love it&#8211;and it&#8217;s easy enough to differentiate with the help of teamwork or calculators.\u00a0 Big puffy hearts!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-11524\"
