Reading Status of the Class and Reading Assessment Notes – Science of Reading

Taking “status of the class” and recording anecdotal reading notes during independent reading time is one of my favorite parts of the school day. With rigorous literacy standards and the Science of Reading movement, it is so essential to get to know our students as readers, to confer with them and coach them, and to make sure they are reading books that are a good fit.

This is a time when I conduct a mini-conference with each child…

a time to record what they are reading
to measure fluency and accuracy
to coach and guide
to celebrate accomplishments
to ask questions
to ask about home reading
to make book recommendations
for other students to hear about books other students are reading
and more!

The entire process takes less than 10 minutes but gives me a HUGE amount of information that helps me guide instruction and helps students reflect on their own reading behaviors and goals.

On Demand Writing Assessments – Easy Grade Writing Prompt BUNDLE Grades 3 – 5

By far one of the biggest “difference makers” for me as a writing teacher has been my use of demand writing prompts to guide my instruction and assess writing. In our class, we have a balance of free writing, process writing, and demand writing—but for me, the most effective writing assessment involves doing a regular demand prompt to see how students are doing on the targets we have worked on all year.

Process writing is critical in the classroom, but as students work together, confer, share, revise, and so on—it becomes difficult to know what they can do independently.

Enter this set of easy to score demand writing prompts!

The resource that follows is a version of what I have done in my classroom for years and have found to be the most efficient, effective, and stress-free way to measure student growth and to see what areas I need to provide additional instruction—to individual students, small focus groups, or the entire class.

The method is simple:

Each prompt is graded using the exact same checklist at the top.
If you use prompts from multiple sets (descriptive, opinion, narrative), you will see that the top portion of the checklist remains the same, allowing you to measure student growth ALL year.
The bottom few lines of the checklist are more specific to the genre of writing.
Each set contains 8 different reproducible prompts complete with checklist, class recording sheet, individual student recording sheet, and directions and suggestions for use.

Independent Reading Logs

Pick and choose from among these home and school reading logs to help your students track their reading, set goals, and improve their reading behaviors. As teachers move toward full implementation of the Common Core, solid independent reading behaviors will be critical to ensure students can sustain reading over extended periods of time. Using reading logs helps teachers know what students are reading, how much they are reading, and can serve as useful tools for conferring, for assessing, and for communicating with students and families.

Using Exit and Entrance Slips to Guide Instruction BUNDLE

For those of you new to formative assessment . . . these exit slips and entrance slips are designed to help you “take the temperature” of your class in terms of student performance and attitudes to help you as you plan your instruction. After all, it does no one any good to find out at the end of a unit that your students haven’t learned all the material. That’s why I started using quick learning checks such as these–I wanted to see where my class stood at each point along their learning journey!

This bundled resource contains the complete “Using Exit Slips to Guide Instruction” and “Using Entrance Slips to Guide Instruction at a reduced price. Some of the slips are the same, but there are some that are uniquely “entrance” (before learning) and uniquely “exit” (after learning). These formative assessment slips can be used to check understanding on academic content OR to get a read on student attitudes and comfort levels and I use them in a couple of ways:

…to see if there are any students with major misconceptions
…to see if the entire class is missing understanding and I need to reteach
…to sort my students into groups for instruction

Again, these exit slips come two per page and are low-ink and ready to copy.

Each slip comes with a “suggestion” page where the slip

is highlighted with a blue box with ideas for how that slip might be

used–and you get more than 20 different formative assessments to use in any subject! Simply make a copy of the slip you want to use, fill in the questions or problems you want to check, and make copies!

I have also divided the slips into two categories—those used to measure academic performance AND those used for students to “self-assess”—whether it be their own understanding, their effort, or their participation. I really believe it is essential for students to take an active role in their learning—and that they need to be reflective and take ownership of their “job” in the classroom!

Math Fact Fluency Assessment & Fact Fluency Tracker – Addition & Multiplication

Need help with fact fluency activities? If you are like me, you have a number of students in your class who still don’t know their addition and multiplication math facts. They didn’t know them last year. They didn’t know them the year before. They think they are “bad at math” because of their inability to quickly retrieve these basic math facts.

Don’t get me wrong–math fact fluency is important…and it sure makes “big math” an awful lot easier!

So what is this resource? This resource gives you tips and suggestions for how to identify students who are struggling with their basic math facts and a method by which you can start to build their confidence, organize your instruction, and gives you a math facts tracker to check for growth!

(NOTE: This is focused on addition fact fluency and multiplication fact fluency. When students become fluent with these operations, they can use their strategies to solve subtraction and division problems. You will get the most “bang for your buck” with addition and multiplication!)

Involve families by sending cards home to practice.
Set aside 5 minutes daily to work on fact fluency.
Have students work with partners that have similar needs.
Set aside a short time once every few weeks to have students do a self-assessment and check their progress.

NOTE: This does not include 11 and 12 facts. There is no strong mathematical reason for memorizing these so they are not the focus of this intervention resource.

On Demand Writing Prompts Assessments – Easy-Grade – Print and Digital

This demand writing resource arose from a need I had to more frequently assess writing and measure students’ progress on a few key writing skills that our district writing rubric doesn’t spell out clearly. I found that these skills were going largely ungraded—and I wasn’t seeing my students make enough progress with their writing.

I knew I didn’t want to add MORE to my plate—but I knew I needed something. I decided to try a short (8 minutes!) demand writing prompt a few times a week. By making it short, I didn’t take away from instructional time, I am able to quickly score it and give feedback, and I can use it to pull strategy groups while I teach our district curriculum. I wanted the rubric right on the page as a reminder for students…much like my other writing prompt resources.

The difference? This is meant to be a quick snapshot—almost like an entrance slip before a writing class. I figure I can give up 8 minutes a few times a week if it will help me to help my students, right?

I figure by giving students a starting topic, we wouldn’t waste time thinking of topics either—and each topic should be something that students really can write a decent “quick write” about. This isn’t meant to be a full essay—just a quick write to check some important skills.

Hands On Line Plot Activities and Line Plots Assessments and Investigations

Do you struggle to find quality line plot resources that are fun AND instructional? Line plots are a key part of many sets of math standards for intermediate grades—but many textbooks give very limited opportunities for meaningful math practice with them.

This resource is designed to get students interpreting line plots, making line plots, collecting data, and more! Includes line plot worksheets and activities with whole numbers AND line plots with fractions. Line plots actually address so many math concepts–and these activities even make them fun!

My students have a blast with the different activities and really are able to show their math thinking on the practice pages. We have tons of great math talk, and the opportunities for students to really “study” the graphs really help them construct meaning—not merely fill in the blanks.

This resource is divided into FOUR main sections:

1. “Interpreting Line Plots

This section has 5 different reproducible line plots with questions to help the students think deeply about the data. Each one also has a place for students to generate their OWN questions about the graph—great for class discussions or partner and small group work.

2. “Hands On Line Plots”

This section has 5 hands on “explorations” where students generate data and create class line plots that they then work to study and analyze. Suggestions for use are included as are both customary and metric versions where appropriate.

3. “Making Line Plots”

In this section, students are given 5 different sets of data to use to “plot”—many of which use fractions. Gridded and “open” line plot pages are included so students can either use a preplanned scale or you can work as a class or in small groups to create your own scales that match the data. Question pages are also included to do additional data analysis once the line plots are created.

4. “Assessing Line Plots”

Although any of the other pages could certainly be used as assessments (and these can be used as practice pages), it’s sometimes nice to have a place for students to work independently to “show what they know”. I have included 5 different assessments that ask questions and present data in different ways.

I hope you find it a fun, rigorous, and meaningful way to get your students truly thinking about data and line plots! Selected answers included where applicable. Page count is approximate. The actual document has far more but some are different versions of certain pages.

Mathematical Practices Standards Self Assessments – Math Practices Checklists

This set of 9 math assessment checklists helps teachers begin to familiarize their students with the Standards for Mathematical Practice and the behaviors and skills needed to be successful mathematicians. Self-assessment is a key part of getting students involved with their own learning and better understanding our expectations for them.

The Common Core Standards for Mathematical Practice are extremely rigorous, and students in grades 3-5 should be expected to demonstrate a higher level of math thinking than ever before. But do the students know what they mean?

These math standards can most definitely be approached in a developmentally appropriate way for intermediate students—but do need to be explicitly taught and modeled. This resource gives you the checklists (in two formats–black and white and color) and teaching suggestions and ideas for how to really help your students understand the importance of these math practices.

In addition to checklists for all 8 Standards for Mathematical Practice, this set includes an overall “Math Behaviors Checklist” for students to start self-monitoring those basic study skills that will make them more successful in math class.

Making anchor charts to match, teaching mini-lessons, and using these checklists can help students understand that math is more than getting the right answer! I hope these help you and your students begin to make sense of the math practice standards. Math is power!
