Taking “status of the class” and recording anecdotal reading notes during independent reading time is one of my favorite parts of the school day. With rigorous literacy standards and the Science of Reading movement, it is so essential to get to know our students as readers, to confer with them and coach them, and to make sure they are reading books that are a good fit.

This is a time when I conduct a mini-conference with each child…

  • a time to record what they are reading
  • to measure fluency and accuracy
  • to coach and guide
  • to celebrate accomplishments
  • to ask questions
  • to ask about home reading
  • to make book recommendations
  • for other students to hear about books other students are reading
  • and more!

The entire process takes less than 10 minutes but gives me a HUGE amount of information that helps me guide instruction and helps students reflect on their own reading behaviors and goals.

This product contains pages of directions that clearly explain (includes photos) how I use this calendar “system” in my classroom to track student reading, to track my anecdotal records, and to monitor student growth. I also give information about using these calendars for yearly planning in literacy.

Included:

  • directions including photographs
  • a sample calendar with examples
  • blank calendars in color and black/white
  • print and digital access
  • an anecdotal record form
  • 2 different binder cover/spine options
  • and more!

This “system” will get your reading records organized for your entire school year.

Now, use DIGITALLY with Google Slide access as well!

No need to purchase year to year–just check back for updates each summer and download the new ones!

***What are teachers saying about this resource?***

“This has got to be one of my all-time favorite and most helpful resources from TpT! My students look forward to sharing their reading update and I love how quick and easy it is to find reading patterns. I use it as a check in at the beginning of each small group, rather than whole class. SO GREAT!”

“This has been the most useful resource in monitoring my students’ independent reading progress. It has increased accountability and motivation! Thank you!”

“As a new intermediate teacher, I was struggling to figure out how to track student reading! This resource was a perfect way to keep track of where everyone was and to encourage and keep track of those who were struggling. Thank you!”

“Use these reproducible bookmarks after conferring with students in their readers’ workshop or guided reading groups. Each page of 3 bookmarks reflects a different learning target you may set as a goal area for a certain student or small group. Students can mark their spots in their book and work on needed concepts at the same time! You will notice these goals do tie to Common Core Standards and can raise the level of rigor in your reading instruction. They are also a great way to communicate learning goals with families.

There are 16 different bookmarks included as well as a blank one for personalizing with other goals. Color copies are included as well as a more printer friendly version of each one.

Using reading logs helps teachers know what students are reading, how much they are reading, and can serve as useful tools for conferring, for assessing, and for communicating with students and families.

This packet contains a number of information filled pages about the “how” and “why” of using independent reading logs, 20 different versions of reading log with several different focus areas, and 4 student self-assessments to help intermediate students become more reflective readers.

This set is nearly identical to set 1 except that is is HORIZONTALLY oriented and a little more “streamlined”. The content of the reading logs is similar. This is the “new and improved” version!

Anecdotal reading calendars

Taking “status” during independent reading time is one of my favorite parts of the school day. This is a time when I conduct a “mini conference” with each child…a time to record what they are reading…to celebrate accomplishments…to ask questions…to ask about home reading…to make book recommendations…for other students to hear about books other students are reading—and more! The entire process takes less than 10 minutes but gives me a HUGE amount of information that helps me guide instruction and helps students reflect on their own reading behaviors.

This product contains pages of directions that clearly explain (includes photos!) how I use this calendar “system” in my classroom to track student reading, to track my anecdotal records, and to monitor student growth. I also give information about using these calendars for yearly planning in literacy. Included are directions, blank calendars in color and black/white, an anecdotal record form, 2 different binder cover/spine options, and more! This “system” will get your reading records organized for your entire school year. No need to purchase year to year–just check back for updates each summer and download the new ones!

As you may know, rigorous reading standards and the Science of Reading movement have asked us to rethink what we do related to independent reading and reader’s workshop. We know reading instruction is multi-faceted and needs to have direct instruction, small group reading, writing about reading, and so much more.

What some people don’t consider is that we often do so much WITH our students one-on-one and in small groups, that they struggle to successfully read on their own.

Many teachers want help establishing a culture for independent reading and the tools needed to make the entire year of independent reading as efficient and meaningful as possible. This resource has you covered!

This resource is geared toward helping teachers “teach” students how to be better independent readers so that precious part of your reading instruction is meaningful and effective. It addresses everything from introducing genres to picking good-fit books to setting goals and monitoring behaviors during independent reading time. Curious? Make sure you check out the preview to see all that you get!

What IS included?

  • Suggestions for lessons to start the year to build better independent reading
  • Genre resources and posters (2 different color/font options)
  • Photos with ideas to build excitement for reading including links to more information
  • Reading surveys
  • Reading goal sheets
  • “What is a good reader?” self-assessments
  • “What is a good reader?” self-assessments
  •  My favorite books list list
  •  My favorite books list
  •  How to pick a “just right” book poster and bookmarks
  •  Mini “Me as a reader” posters to go with the checklists!
  •  Classroom signs to use in reader’s workshop
  •  Classroom signs to use in reader’s workshop
  •  Fun lesson ideas
  • * Explanations for all of it!

and more!

If you feel like you need a little “something” to help kick off your year on the right foot where students learn good independent reading habits and behaviors, this might help you out! It is geared for grades 3-5–but I am confident that grade 2 teachers can use a great deal of it as well.

It’s hard to assign a number of pages to this resource because there are several versions of some forms. The document is 139 pages, but you wouldn’t use all of them. I encourage you to download the preview so you can see exactly what you get as you think about starting your year off in an organized way.
