Help Students Build Positive Learning Habits! Let’s face it—no matter how well we plan, student behaviors and work habits can make or break the flow of a lesson! Many students need these skills to be explicitly taught, modeled, and reinforced, and having clear visual reminders can make a big difference.

These Academic Behaviors and Learning Habits Posters give you an easy, meaningful way to establish classroom expectations that focus on the skills that really matter—effort, perseverance, collaboration, and responsibility.

This back-to-school activity is a perfect “get-to-know-you” project, but this glyph is far more than a back-to-school bulletin board (although it sure can be cute—I even provided you some ready-to-print letters to make a complete display!).

So often we miss out on important teaching moments at the beginning of the year, so I have tried to make it so easy for you! How does this project help?

  • It is a great way for students to get to know each other…
  • It is a great way for you to explicitly teach what “quality work” is…(don’t worry–I help you with this!)
  • It is a great way to start the year by talking about goal setting….
  • It is a great way to celebrate how you are all alike AND different in so many ways—and that’s what makes every class special…
  • It is a great way for you to gently ease back into math, writing, and direction following in a low pressure way!

The template for the pennant is included (can be used as is or blown up to 11 x 17 inch size) as are the glyph directions, ideas for supplemental lessons/discussion, two work samples to help in discussing work quality, and letters to use for a bulletin board or hallway display.

Check out the preview and video preview for more!

Whether you are looking for morning meeting slides for back-to-school activities or community-building ideas throughout the year, this resource is a super easy and fun way to help your students get to know each other AND start to build classroom culture!

This set of task cards is geared toward two different objectives:

1. To help students get to know each other as they begin to form their new classroom community

2. To begin to practice accountable talk and respectful classroom speaking and listening.

What is included?

  • 16 discussion prompts in full-sized, full color slides to print or project
  • Task card versions in color AND black and white for use in small groups
  • 4 posters to print and project to get students using accountable talk stems
  • Suggestions for use
  • FULL DIGITAL ACCESS!

Check out all these ways these can be used!

  • Consider using this activity to practice “accountable talk” and having quality discussions. (Talk STEM slides included to help). Consider projecting or printing these and practicing!
  • This is a great back-to-school activity—and a perfect chance to talk about respecting people’s strengths, opinions, and backgrounds. Make sure you work to establish that feeling of “safety” so all students feel good about sharing their ideas.
  • Project one slide at a time and have “table talk” or small group discussions. Use all in one session or divide into several.
  • Create a set of several slides. Use a timer and give each group a set amount of time to complete each task or discussion.
  • Consider using the slides multiple times so students can get to know different groups of students.
  • Print the cards like task cards. Make a set for each group to use. You can use a timer or let them work at their own pace.
  • Send some or all of the cards digitally to small groups.
  • Students can discuss verbally or can record their thinking on paper.
  • Consider a class meeting after using the cards to talk about what students have learned and how it went.
