Intermediate Math Journal Prompts

Whether you are a seasoned math journal user or are ready to dabble for the first time, this resource has something for you! This download is a set of math journal problems which are perfect for most intermediate (grades 3-5) students and provide real-world problem solving practice including fun and exciting, non-traditional math journal problems including word problems, “Mystery Numbers”, “True/False Statements”, and “Tell me what you know about…” problems.

In addition, this resource explains clearly the connection to the Common Core and provides rubrics and answer keys to help with instruction. In it, each of the problems come with multiple problems on a page, ready to be copied, cut, and glued into students’ math journals.

The Mathematical Practice Standards of perseverance, attends to precision, and constructs viable arguments are addressed along with the math content standard of “Use place value understanding and properties of operations to perform multi-digit arithmetic”. This problem set is ready to be copied for use in your class!

In this resource, I have included samples of some of the different types of activities/prompts I use in my math journals. I have tried to explain each one and then provide examples that you can replicate with your class. Consider writing other prompts based on these that take YOUR students’ names and interests into account—students are very motivated to solve problems that are real to them. Reading Status of the Class and Reading Assessment Notes – Science of Reading

Taking “status of the class” and recording anecdotal reading notes during independent reading time is one of my favorite parts of the school day. With rigorous literacy standards and the Science of Reading movement, it is so essential to get to know our students as readers, to confer with them and coach them, and to make sure they are reading books that are a good fit.

This is a time when I conduct a mini-conference with each child…

a time to record what they are reading
to measure fluency and accuracy
to coach and guide
to celebrate accomplishments
to ask questions
to ask about home reading
to make book recommendations
for other students to hear about books other students are reading
and more!

The entire process takes less than 10 minutes but gives me a HUGE amount of information that helps me guide instruction and helps students reflect on their own reading behaviors and goals.

This product contains pages of directions that clearly explain (includes photos) how I use this calendar “system” in my classroom to track student reading, to track my anecdotal records, and to monitor student growth. I also give information about using these calendars for yearly planning in literacy.

Reading Goal Student Bookmarks

“Use these reproducible bookmarks after conferring with students in their readers’ workshop or guided reading groups. Each page of 3 bookmarks reflects a different learning target you may set as a goal area for a certain student or small group. Students can mark their spots in their book and work on needed concepts at the same time! You will notice these goals do tie to Common Core Standards and can raise the level of rigor in your reading instruction. They are also a great way to communicate learning goals with families.

There are 16 different bookmarks included as well as a blank one for personalizing with other goals. Color copies are included as well as a more printer friendly version of each one.

Word Problem Task Cards: Amazing Animals–Grades 3-5 Mixed Operations

This set of 20 animal word problem task cards supports many features of the Common Core State Standards. Pages can be printed, cut into quadrants, and laminated to use as task cards (color version) or can be copied and cut apart to use in math journals. Pages are included in color AND with white background for easy copying. There is also a blank “work sheet” where students can show their work if you use these as task cards.

Problems are all based on high interest, “amazing” animal facts. Note that students are encouraged to write coordinating “number sentences” to demonstrate complete understanding of the operations used. It is recommended that you teach multiple ways to show a variable…an empty box, a question mark, and letters as typically seen in algebra. They can do it!

The Common Core clearly states that students should be able to solve a variety of real-world math problems where the “variable” moves to different locations in the number sentence. Refer to pages 88 and 89 (Tables 1 and 2) for further clarification. All four operations are used with numbers of varying sizes and even different units of measure.

On Demand Writing Assessments – Easy Grade Writing Prompt BUNDLE Grades 3 – 5

By far one of the biggest “difference makers” for me as a writing teacher has been my use of demand writing prompts to guide my instruction and assess writing. In our class, we have a balance of free writing, process writing, and demand writing—but for me, the most effective writing assessment involves doing a regular demand prompt to see how students are doing on the targets we have worked on all year.

Process writing is critical in the classroom, but as students work together, confer, share, revise, and so on—it becomes difficult to know what they can do independently.

Enter this set of easy to score demand writing prompts!

The resource that follows is a version of what I have done in my classroom for years and have found to be the most efficient, effective, and stress-free way to measure student growth and to see what areas I need to provide additional instruction—to individual students, small focus groups, or the entire class.

The method is simple:

Each prompt is graded using the exact same checklist at the top.
If you use prompts from multiple sets (descriptive, opinion, narrative), you will see that the top portion of the checklist remains the same, allowing you to measure student growth ALL year.
The bottom few lines of the checklist are more specific to the genre of writing.
Each set contains 8 different reproducible prompts complete with checklist, class recording sheet, individual student recording sheet, and directions and suggestions for use.

Place Value Sequencing and Comparison Lessons and Activities

The Common Core and other rigorous standards clearly want students to be able to work flexibly with large numbers and place value concepts. This set of 4 place value lessons help build number sense and an understanding of how our base 10 system works. Each activity can be done as whole class interactive demonstrations or in small groups. Directions are included.

Each also has a follow up independent practice activity that can be used as homework, review, or even as a place value assessment to check understanding.
