This addition with regrouping math resource came to me as I continue to search for low prep, ready-to-print ways to challenge my math students and provide enrichment while still addressing all rigorous state standards. Now it even includes a digital component for optimum flexibility.

These 10 tasks incorporate higher-level thinking, estimation strategies, and have multiple solutions! I want students to be able to work independently or with peers so directions need to be simple and easy to follow.

In addition to providing a HUGE amount of practice with addition with regrouping and problem solving, this resource is designed to really help students develop their understanding of place value and number sense—critical foundations for more advanced math concepts.

Students are asked to do a number of different activities requiring estimating and addition with regrouping. There is a TON of flexibility with this resource, and I hope you can find a great way to make it work for you and your students! I designed it to be very low ink as well.

So—what are your options? For me, I love having the Mind Boggling Math displayed in my room so students can access it any time. If you don’t have the wall space or want to use it with only one child, don’t worry! I have included a single page version of the board and really everything you need is included on the student sheets! It can be a stand alone resource! So what do you get?

**************************************************************************

  • Letters to spell “Mind Boggling Math” for a bulletin board (optional)
  • Full page number grid to use if you want students to have their own copy
  • Five, two-part math challenges
  • Digital access to these 10 main challenges
  • The number tiles ready to cut out and use on a display
  • 5 ADDITIONAL “Even More” challenges so you can use this activity over and over again!

**************************************************************************

***What are teachers saying about this resource?***

“I am so excited to use this resource in my classroom! I really think it will challenge my students. Thank you!”

“These rocked my students’ world! I loved the challenge in them!”

“Used this as an early finisher station. A lot of choices for students and easy to prep. It made a nice looking bulletin board, too!”

Teaching the math practice standards and problem solving skills is as important to my students as teaching them the math content. Many students coming to me often are lacking the “perseverance” needed to successfully tackle new and challenging math problems. We can explicitly teach this!

Over time, I have refined my own definition of what “perseverance” means and have worked hard to teach my students how to be energized, thoughtful mathematicians. I am hoping that you find this resource helpful for you and your grade 4-6 students as well!

It’s easy to use, low ink, and suggestions for use are included so you can be up and running in minutes! Now I have even included digital access!

What do you get? I start this unit with a number of lesson ideas and suggestions for how to get your students more engaged and self-reliant with their problem solving. I include photos from my classroom, learning posters that can be turned into anchor charts, rubrics, checklists, and more.

But what is really the heart of the unit is the 24 high level problems that will really test your students’ ability to apply these new problem solving skills. Some of the problems have many solutions. Others are tricky to read and interpret. Others require them to simply “dig in” and start guessing and checking!

What makes the problems particularly useful is that I provide them in multiple formats–much like my many word problem sets.

I have pages with 6 different problems per page, with 6 copies of the same problem per page, as “poster headings” (one of my favorites–fully explained in the resource!), and with one problem on a page for students to really show their work and their thinking. I sometimes use these as assessments to see how my students are doing independently because so much of our math work is done cooperatively. Now, digital access allows even more flexibility!

I hope you take the time to download the preview and see what this resource has to offer–and I hope that you, too, can see that problem solving with your students can be challenging, rigorous, and FUN! Whether you use this for your entire class, as enrichment, or in centers–I believe there is something for everyone. (Yes–the answers are included!) 🙂

**************************************************************************

***What are teachers saying about this resource?***

“Love that my kids can use the framework of Growth Mindset with this and persevere through problem solving.”

“There is something here for all my students in grade 3-5! My students ask me every day when they get to solve another puzzle! They love that there isn’t necessarily a correct answer because the possible solutions are endless! They made giant posters out of their puzzles that they want to line the hallways with. They are so proud of the word they did using these puzzles. Thank you so much for the wonderful product!”

“This has been a great way to begin the year! I love that I can continue to use this product to challenge the students going forward as well. Thank you!”

Looking for a fun way to have your students practice addition and subtraction with regrouping–without worksheets? Does your math workshop need a ready-to-use math station that builds math fluency with addition and subtraction concepts? How about a way to differentiate for students at all levels?

This is for you! This set of “Toss and Solve” differentiated task cards takes students from two digit to four digit addition and subtraction—and move from no regrouping to complex regrouping!

Whether you use this as a way to review with a student needing extra practice, a way for partners to practice together, or a center for a math workshop—this is an easy-to-teach tool to provide students with a way to mix practice with a little fun—and some mathematical thinking along the way!

The directions are simple! (and are included complete with photos and suggestions for use!) Students can either just use the reproducible recording sheets OR can use the task cards to solve the problems. Select the level of problems that will give your students the right amount of challenge. See the cards numbers and levels below.

Students roll dice to make the “bottom” numbers. The top numbers have been designed to make sure students don’t run into too much trouble with numbers that “don’t work”! For example, the subtraction problems with no regrouping have all numbers 6 or greater to make sure that students do not have to do any trading.

As the problems get more challenging, students will want to use what they know about numbers to arrange the dice into numbers that “work”. The number of possible “rolls” is endless—making these cards usable over and over…they never need to do the same problem twice!

My students love that THEY have some control over their problems, love checking their own work…and I love that ALL my students can do this activity—and I can pick the right level of challenge to build computational fluency without them trying problems that are too challenging. What a great way to work on “precision”! Each section is clearly labeled with the type of problems included. Everything you need is here—just add dice!

Why teach creativity and creative thinking? If you are like me, you recognize that all the pushing we do to pass tests and get through our curriculum can be a dangerous game. I believe that if we prepare our students to be creative thinkers, hard workers, and team players and pair that with quality instruction–the rest will simply fall into place.

What we often don’t leave enough time for in our busy school day is time to do activities that nurture creativity. Whether it be letting students solve engaging real-world problems, write freely about topics they care about, research things in the world that interest them—or any other exercises in creativity, we must give students time to practice being creative.

This resource is geared toward helping you squeeze a little “creativity instruction” into your packed day! Whether you use these as warm ups, team builders, center activities, or exercises for fast finishers, this resource has everything ready for you to print and use and even has work samples to make it even more clear.

What’s included?

SIX different types of activities are included with this resource…(3 from each set for a total of 78 ready-to-print pages), including blank examples so you or yourstudents can make up your own! Check out the preview to see more detailed descriptions of the six different activities!

  • “Squigglestorm” sheets where students take a provided doodle and extend it into a drawing from their own minds.
  • “Braintimer” sheets where students need to think “outside the box” to come up with lists, drawings, and objects that fit certain categories in a set amount of time. The goal? Find solutions that no one else has tried!
  • “Word Power” sheets that ask students to brainstorm ideas off of a word and to make word “ladders” that take them from one concept to the next. Creativity is key—and there are countless solutions!
  • “Picture This” sheets where students take a piece of a drawing and design the scene around it.
  • “Number Namers” sheets where students work mathematically to come up many ways to make a number–and then try to predict what methods will be “predictable” answers and which answers might be “unique”. It’s a great differentiation tool!
  • “Tell a Tale” sheets that ask students to take the first few dramatic sentences of a story and then create the rest. Students love being able to dig into fiction writing when they are given just a little nudge–and the sky is the limit!

———————————————————————————–

These activities are great for upper elementary and middle school students—and are a GREAT staff development activity to remind even the adults how important it is to think outside the box!

Whether you call them “open ended math challenges” or “real world problem solving tasks” or “rich math tasks”, finding engaging math problems that apply multiple standards are not easy to find. In fact, if you are looking for challenging math problems and tasks that keep your students engaged, apply the math you have taught, and meet your math standards–I can help you out!

My guess is that you are looking for a low-prep, ready-to-print (or send digitally) math project that has just the right amount of challenge and is engaging for your students while being tied to your curriculum standards. Check out these low-floor, high-ceiling tasks!

It’s time for students to apply addition, subtraction, and money skills to a real-world math challenge!

  • Do you want flexibility—a math resource that can be used with small enrichment groups or can be tiered so you can use it with your entire class…but at different levels?
  • Do you want your students to be problem solving, thinking creatively, writing and talking about math, and working collaboratively?
  • Do you want them working on math in “real world” contexts?
  • Do you want to have both PRINT and DIGITAL options available all in one resource?

This series may be just what you are looking for!

For years, I have wished and hoped for a resource that would provide my students with high quality, open ended tasks to allow them to apply what they learn to real world situations. Guess what? They are hard to find!

So I thought and I thought…and finally the idea for a flexible, high level series of problems came to me. They can be used whole class…with enrichment groups…for fast finishers…or even in different ways with different students.

This version is PERFECT for any time of year and with any group of students because it is all about planning an amazing trip to an amusement park! There are lots of factors to consider–this is not a fill-in-the-blank resource…but a true open-ended math project. (NOTE: This means there is not an answer key for the main part of this task as there are countless solutions.)

Each “Thinker Task” resource is based on a different real world theme–like planning the timing of a holiday feast, spending a day at an amusement park, or planning a party–and students need to use the “Math by the Numbers” posters (available in full color to laminate for centers and in black and white for easy copying) to work on a multiple step, open ended project.

What’s Included?

  • Color, black and white, and digital versions of the “Math by the Numbers” pages
  • Differentiation options to help you find just the right “fit” for your class
  • The real world “situation” page–where students read, make sense of the problem, and then come up with their plan to solve
  • 6 additional practice pages–at two different levels. Perfect for even more problem solving! (all answers are included)
  • Teaching tips
  • Math talk prompts to keep your accountable talk moving
  • Additional enrichment ideas for students who need even more!

These activities are tiered so that the same activity is available at different levels.

Want to save 25% on the bundled set of these? Just CLICK HERE!

This version focuses on addition and subtraction of money, basic multiplication, and multi-step problem solving. It is ideal for grades 3 – 5 and could be used in other grade levels at your discretion. I hope you enjoy it–and the flexibility it offers you

Whether you call them “open ended math challenges” or “real world problem solving tasks” or “rich math tasks”, finding and engaging math task that applies multiple standards is not easy. In fact, most math series have very few quality problem solving experiences for you to choose from!

For years, I have wished and hoped for a resource that would provide my students with high quality, open ended tasks to allow them to apply what they learn to real world situations. Guess what? They are hard to find!

So I thought and I thought…and finally, the idea for a flexible, high level series of problems came to me. They can be used whole class…with enrichment groups…for fast finishers…or even in different ways with different students.

My guess is that you are also looking for a low-prep, ready-to-print (or send digitally) math project that has just the right amount of challenge and is engaging for your students while being tied to your curriculum standards.

Check out this low-floor, high-ceiling math task!

  • Flexible—a math resource that can be used with small enrichment groups or can be tiered so you can use it with your entire class…but at different levels?
  • Get your students to be problem solving, thinking creatively, writing and talking about math, and working collaboratively?
  • Do you want students working on math in “real world” contexts?
  • Do you want to have both PRINT and DIGITAL options available all in one resource?

This version is PERFECT for back-to-school time and with any group of students because it is all about having the freedom to spend a budget on school supplies and clothes! There are lots of factors to consider–this is not a fill-in-the-blank resource…and is available at two levels–whole dollar amounts only and decimals.

Each of these PBL resources is based on a different real-world theme–like shopping for back to school clothes–and students need to use the “Math by the Numbers” posters (available in full color to laminate for centers and in black and white for easy copying) to work on a multiple-step, open-ended project.

This math task is tiered so that the same activity is available at different levels. Not only that, but you get additional math practice sheets (also tiered), suggestions for math discussions, extension activities, and more–including digital access!

This version focuses on addition and subtraction with money, multi-step problem solving, and reading tables. It is appropriate for enrichment in second and is ideal for grades 3 and 4 or review for grade 5. I hope you enjoy it–and the flexibility it offers you.

What’s included?

  • Real-world, engaging math project centered around a back-to-school shopping scenario
  • Focus on essential math skills: addition and subtraction with money, multi-step problem solving, reading and comparing data in tables
  • Two levels of differentiation for both the core task and practice pages to meet a range of student needs
  • Open-ended challenge encourages creative thinking, organization, and written math explanations
  • Built-in collaboration options—ideal for team or partner work
  • Multiple practice activities aligned to the central data set (Math by the Numbers)
  • “What’s the Question?” extension activity lets students generate their own word problems
  • Guided math discourse prompts to promote deeper class discussion and reflection
  • Ideas for project extensions including real-life research and creative math applications
  • Digital access version included for flexible classroom or remote use
  • Printable in color and black-and-white for classroom or individual use

There is no doubt that students need many opportunities to practice the addition and subtraction computation skills they learn. Will asking them to complete multiple worksheets filled with addition and subtraction problems accomplish this?

PERHAPS. Instead, I think we can design rigorous math learning opportunities that are richer, encourage thinking and reasoning, provide opportunities for math dialogue, developing growth mindsets, and discourse skills, and…gasp…are fun!

This resource does exactly that–provide opportunities for students to practice addition and subtraction with regrouping, estimating, and more!

What is included?

  • 3 sets of number cards that are used for each included activity. These cards are low ink and can be copied on colored paper or cardstock to help keep things organized. The three sets (3 digit addition, 4 digit addition, and 5 digit addition) allow you to either differentiate within your class OR to use the 3 digit set early in the year and then use the larger numbers later. You have tons of options!
  • 4 different “class challenges”. Use these as a warm up to your math class, as a review of addition/subtraction throughout the year, or as a great test prep activity. Directions for each are included on one page.
  • 4 whole class or small group learning activities that reinforce computation through cooperation, reasoning, and estimation. Directions are written to fit on one page so they can be included at centers for students to use as guides if needed.
  • 3 sets of task cards (one for each number set—3, 4, and 5 digits). These cards are perfect for math workshop, small group instruction or review, or even enrichment. They vary in levels of challenge and are great for individuals or collaborative learning. Each set comes with blank recording sheets as well.

I hope you find these activities both fun and meaningful. Check out the preview for more information about what is included.

Whether you call them “open ended math challenges” or “real world problem solving tasks” or “rich math tasks”, finding engaging math problems that apply multiple standards are not easy to find. In fact, if you are looking for a fun Thanksgiving math task that keep your students engaged, applies the math you have taught, and meets your math standards–I can help you out!

My guess is that you are looking for a low-prep, ready-to-print (or send digitally) math project that has just the right amount of challenge and is engaging for your students while being tied to your curriculum standards. Check out these low-floor, high-ceiling tasks!

Are you looking for a high-level math project-based learning/problem solving project to use with your students for some fun Thanksgiving math–or truly at ANY time of the year! This “feast” themed project is perfect for this time of year, but no mention of any specific holiday is mentioned so there is tons of flexibility!

I know finding quality math tasks that are engaging and low-prep is tough–but I’ve got you covered!

This may be just what you are looking for!

Want to save 25% on the bundled set of these? Just CLICK HERE!

For years, I have wished and hoped for a resource that would provide my students with high-quality, open-ended tasks to allow them to apply what they learn to real world situations. Guess what? They are hard to find! So I thought and I thought…and finally, the idea for a flexible, high-level series of problems came to me.

They can be used

  • whole class
  • with enrichment groups
  • for fast finishers
  • or even in different ways with different groups of students.

Again, this version is PERFECT for use around Thanksgiving, Christmas, or any other holiday where a “feast” is in order (no holiday is explicitly mentioned) as it asks students to use the information presented to budget time and food to plan out the meal preparations. There are lots of factors to consider–this is not a fill-in-the-blank resource!

Each of the resources in this series is based on a different real world theme–like planning a holiday feast–and students need to use the “Math by the Numbers” posters (available in full color to laminate for centers and in black and white for easy copying) to work on a multiple step, open ended project.

The activity is tiered so that the same activity is available at different levels. Not only that, but you get additional math practice sheets (also tiered), suggestions for math discussions, extension activities, and more!

This version focuses on elapsed time, basic fraction concepts, reading tables, and multi-step problem solving. It is ideal for grades 3 and 4 and could be used in other grade levels at your discretion. I hope you enjoy it–and the flexibility it offers you.
