So…what’s included in THIS resource?

• Everything you need to do 5 different sorts related to angle concepts. The concepts covered are:

1. Is it a right angle?” (using visual clues to “see” 90 degrees)

2. Acute, right, obtuse, or other?” (sorting into angle types)

3. Using a protractor” (sorting angles into categories based on measurement)

4. Putting them all together” (combining angles)

5. Drawing angles” (using protractors to draw angles according to categories)

• The blog post with photos that explains EXACTLY how I completed a sort with my own students. Feel free to get creative and try different approaches—but I have given one highly effective and efficient way to do this.

• A “Show What You Know” sheet that follows the rule of the sort. Use as independent practice or as an assessment after you have done a sort to see what the students know and what they still need to learn. Many of these also ask students to explain their thinking—a key part of the CCSS!

• “Is it a polygon? (This sort focuses on getting students to recognize the characteristics of polygons)

• *Is it a line? What kind of line? (This sort helps students sort lines that are parallel, perpendicular, intersecting, and “other”)

• *Quadrilaterals (This sort asks students to classify quadrilaterals by properties. It can be done multiple times in multiple ways!)

The concepts covered vary from “What does ‘equal’ really mean?” to solving simple algebraic expressions such as “4n – 5 = 11”. What level are these area and perimeter task cards?

The first cards involve counting squares to find area and perimeter. As the set progresses, students use the area and perimeter formulas to solve “open” rectangle problems. Finally, the last 8 cards have “irregular” shapes that require students to either decompose the shape into smaller rectangles or to find the area of the entire shape and “take away” a piece.

My students LOVE these and actually asked me to make MORE of them! What a great way for students to share their different strategies and improve their math talk!
