The ability to read a text and use “clues” to help figure out what might be going on in a story and what the characters are like is a critical skill for students who are working toward reading more challenging texts.

“Reading between the lines”, or “inferring” is the ability to do this smoothly so that comprehension is complete. These cards give the opportunity for teachers to see what students can do with texts—what conclusions they can draw, and if they can place the event within the context of a story.

Each card provides a short situation and then asks students to discuss two separate things—to make an inference about the situation or the characters, and then to think about what might have happened before and after! By doing so, these cards can really help with some focused practice that can then be carried over into students’ independent reading.

Whether you teach from the Common Core or any other set of rigorous standards, being able to infer is a critical reading skill. Remember to model YOUR thinking as you discuss these as well.

This text structures resource was created for use in my classroom to support my increased use of informational text in both reading and writing. I have been explicitly teaching my students about these informational text structures and about the signal words that can help them understand written texts. 

This is perfect to help students…

• Recognize text structure signal words authors use to help you understand their information 
• Convey their own messages more clearly when working on informational writing by planning with graphic organizers
• Use these same graphic organizers to track their thinking when they read informational texts 

I have put all of it here in one place along with some suggestions for use!

Best practice says that students are more likely to achieve a learning target if they know what the goal is—so this resource is geared toward helping with that.

The learning targets are clustered into categories as listed below:

*How I sound when I read (fluency/accuracy) 7 learning targets

*How I stay focused when I read (reading habits) 7 learning targets

*How I monitor myself when I read 5 learning targets

*How I comprehend informational texts 9 learning targets

*How I comprehend fiction texts 13 learning targets

*How I share my ideas about reading (oral/written) 10 learning targets

Each cluster has different colored background to make it easy to identify. Every learning target in that section has:

*A full page version of the target that can be printed out and displayed during a group/individual meeting.

*A full color page of 3 bookmarks that can be printed and cut and given to students to use. Many ask them to record places in the text where they practiced the skill.

*A black and white version of the bookmark to save on ink.

*Information about each section with instructional hints and background information

SUGGESTIONS FOR USE:

*Print off the full page versions, put in sheet protectors, and put in a binder. Just use post it notes to mark the different pages you are using with groups to easily flip back and forth!

*Print the full page versions 2 per page and use a small three ring binder to keep them.

*Project the full page versions when teaching full class lessons

*Have students glue the bookmarks they “master” in their reading notebooks.

*Tape/glue bookmarks into an assignment notebook to show families what skills are being worked on.

Whether you use a textbook, resources from the library, videos, or online research—this resource should be open-ended enough for anyone to tailor it to their instructional needs. Please be mindful of the complex historical issues surrounding this time period and do your research so that you present this period in history with due attention to ALL the people involved. This was a complicated time in history–and it is often taught without the “ugly” side of the growth of our nation and its impact on those here first.

The first pages of this resource include some “note taking” sheets that students can use to organize their findings. They can certainly use a notebook or other tools as well, but I wanted my students to see that notes can be organized into categories, so I created the categories for them. I have also included a blank sheet in case you have other areas you want students to investigate and research.

The second group of pages include the different flaps needed to create the lap book pictured in the samples. Remember, you can use all of them or just some depending on your needs. I have also included several extra templates in case you wish to customize this project even more. Using interactive notebooks instead? Easy! Just use the templates in your notebook rather than create a separate project.
