This set of five area and perimeter activities can help solidify your students’ understanding of area and perimeter in creative and engaging ways. These fun activities are all in alignment with the expectations for area and perimeter in the Common Core and other rigorous math standards for grades 3-4.

How do I use them?

I use these as a supplement for my textbook—and a replacement for some of the llow-level, fill-in-the-blank area and perimeter worksheets. Students love the hands-on, meaningful activities! So often we ask students to use formulas for area and perimeter but don’t work to build conceptual understanding. These activities take care of that!

What is included?

  • 5 engaging area and perimeter lessons
  • All teacher directions including tons of photos to show the ideas in action
  • All needed printables and sheets
  • Work samples
  • Additional practice pages

What are the 5 lessons?

  1. An exploration activity to build the foundations of area and perimeter concepts.
  2. A cooperative challenge task to really get students thinking!
  3. An area and perimeter art activity–and all you need are some narrow strips of paper that you cut yourself!
  4. An “explain your thinking” activity where students look for misconceptions and write about them.
  5. An exploration based on the book “Spaghetti and Meatballs for All” (although the activity could be adapted to be done without the book).

What are my options?

Use as whole class activities, as stations or centers, or as options in math workshop. All of them allow students to practice their skills and deepen understanding about area and perimeter concepts. Additional practice sheets are also included for you to use if you wish.

What are teachers saying about this resource?

“My students absolutely ADORED this product, and that says a lot because they don’t typically tell me how much they like a math assignment! I love how it guides students to make important connections without them feeling “guided”. That wonderful lightbulb moment that we as teachers are always hoping for happened for almost all of my students with this hands-on project!”

“I’m never disappointed with a resource from The Teacher Studio. These area and perimeter activities were a wonderful resource to help my students construct their own knowledge of these concepts. The students were engaged and it was easy to scaffold for the students who needed more support. Thanks for another great product.”

Area and perimeter lessons and activities are a key part of upper elementary math class! Unfortunately, math textbooks and math worksheets often provide low level, fill-in the-blank area and perimeter problems. These three area and perimeter resources are perfect for building true understanding, keeping students engaged, and using formative assessment to check progress on different area and perimeter standards.

Downloading the preview will give you a peek at each of the three resources so you can see what you get. In a nutshell, this bundle is geared toward deepening student understanding of the concepts of area and perimeter.

  • The first resource in the bundle is a set of 5 higher level area and perimeter projects and activities that allow students to manipulate and “see” the concepts rather than simply memorize a rule.
  • The second resource is a comprehensive formative area and perimeter assessment resource that gives you dozens and dozens of ways to measure your students’ understanding of area and perimeter concepts. Many are far more than “fill in the blank” assessments—and all easy to administer and grade! Low ink!
  • Finally, the third resource is a set of differentiated task cards that move from counting squares to using formulas to find the area and perimeter of both rectangles and composite figures.

This “Teaching Tandem” helps teachers teach the very difficult concept of angle concepts and measurements and types of angles. The first resource is a set of three “hand on” activities meant to help students really deeper their understanding of angle types and sizes.

The second resource is one of my popular “concept sort” resources which gives students 5 different angle sorts geared toward getting students talking about math—and providing you with a way to catch misconceptions and help students truly understand angles at a much more sophisticated level than most textbooks provide. These are two of my favorites—and I hope you find them useful as you teach your angle studies! This is a rigorous resource–certainly appropriate for grades 4, 5, and even as a solid review for grade 6.

Looking for a way to give your students practice finding the area and perimeter of rectangles and irregular shapes? This set of 20 differentiated area and perimeter task cards increases in difficulty throughout the set as students move from counting squares to using area and perimeter formulas.

What level are these area and perimeter task cards?

The first cards involve counting squares to find area and perimeter. As the set progresses, students use the area and perimeter formulas to solve “open” rectangle problems. Finally, the last 8 cards have “irregular” shapes that require students to either decompose the shape into smaller rectangles or to find the area of the entire shape and “take away” a piece.

My students LOVE these and actually asked me to make MORE of them! What a great way for students to share their different strategies and improve their math talk!

Use in countless ways!

  • as a math station…
  • as a class review…
  • with an intervention group…or
  • showcase individual cards under a document camera for a class warm up!
  • Laminate the cards and encourage students to interact with them–to draw, label, count, or use any strategies they have for solving these differentiated cards.

What is included?

  • 20 half-sheet task cards available in both color and black and white.
  • Recording sheets
  • Answer key

What are teachers saying?

“Great center activity to practice area and perimeter. Really gives students a greater understanding of the concept by using concrete models.”

“This resource scaffolds the learning nicely. I look forward to this lesson every time.”

“Loved the different levels of the task cards. Very easy to use to differentiate. I used the task cards as a game (tasketball) and my students loved it! Thanks so much!”

“Another fantastic resource I used to help my students with area and perimeter! I used it as a “write the room” center and students had to work to figure out the area and perimeter!”

“I love the ease of these task cards. They easily target the skill I am working on and are low-prep which is a plus.”

This set of 20 time and money word problems reflect the Common Core and other rigorous standards for grades 2 and 3. Problems are included in FOUR formats:

  • with multiple copies on a page to be cut out and glued into a math journal
  • on reproducible pages to use as practice sheets (4 problems per page)
  • on full sheet pages that give workspace for one problem, a place for students to write matching equations, and a lined area for students to explain their work—an important part of the CCSS!
  • and now DIGITAL SLIDES for even more flexibility!

All problems have built-in differentiation with an “EXTRA” component for fast finishers and good thinkers! Perfect for differentiation–and really makes 40 problems instead of 20!

Answers are included as are three rubrics to use to help in scoring the

Standards for Mathematical Practice!

The 20 problems included require students to use addition and subtraction strategies to solve time and money problems. These problems are geared for students in grades 2 and 3 and would also be perfect for interventions in upper grades.

Why did I write these?

Over the years I have noticed that students tend to look for routine in math class. If it’s a division unit, they will divide any two numbers they find! If it’s a subtraction unit, they try to regroup everything!

For that reason, I try hard to sprinkle in a variety of problems all year that require students to think and apply what they have learned—perhaps draw a picture or make a table to help . . . but, most importantly, to THINK about math. I hope you find these useful!

I hope you find uses for all three versions of the problems…perhaps using a page or two from each as you see fit. You can use this to teach a mini unit on multi-step problems or simply use them throughout the year to improve problem solving! Check out the preview to see everything included.

NOW INCLUDES A DIGITAL COMPONENT AS WELL! All problems can be sent digitally and recorded either on the problem slides or an included answer sheet.

You can use this to teach a mini unit on problem solving or simply use them throughout the year to improve math thinking! The problems are written in such a way that fourth graders should be able to access them—perhaps (if needed) with the support of pictures, manipulatives, or teamwork. 5th graders should be able to handle them independently. They are great problems for students to work on persevering, for deciding which operation to use, and for sharing different solution strategies.

The 20 problems included require students to use a variety of strategies to solve different measurement problems. These problems are geared for students in grades 4 and 5 although they are perfect for older students intervention or additional practice. Problems are worded in a variety of ways to really help them develop deep understanding about the following measurement concepts. Both metric and customary problems are included.

Problems 1-5: Length

Problems 6-10: Weight

Problems 11-15: Capacity

Problems 16-20: Time

This set of task cards are perfect to use

Do you struggle to find quality line plot resources that are fun AND instructional? Line plots are a key part of many sets of math standards for intermediate grades—but many textbooks give very limited opportunities for meaningful math practice with them.

This resource is designed to get students interpreting line plots, making line plots, collecting data, and more! Includes line plot worksheets and activities with whole numbers AND line plots with fractions. Line plots actually address so many math concepts–and these activities even make them fun!

My students have a blast with the different activities and really are able to show their math thinking on the practice pages. We have tons of great math talk, and the opportunities for students to really “study” the graphs really help them construct meaning—not merely fill in the blanks.

This resource is divided into FOUR main sections:

1. “Interpreting Line Plots

This section has 5 different reproducible line plots with questions to help the students think deeply about the data. Each one also has a place for students to generate their OWN questions about the graph—great for class discussions or partner and small group work.

2. “Hands On Line Plots”

This section has 5 hands on “explorations” where students generate data and create class line plots that they then work to study and analyze. Suggestions for use are included as are both customary and metric versions where appropriate.

3. “Making Line Plots”

In this section, students are given 5 different sets of data to use to “plot”—many of which use fractions. Gridded and “open” line plot pages are included so students can either use a preplanned scale or you can work as a class or in small groups to create your own scales that match the data. Question pages are also included to do additional data analysis once the line plots are created.

4. “Assessing Line Plots”

Although any of the other pages could certainly be used as assessments (and these can be used as practice pages), it’s sometimes nice to have a place for students to work independently to “show what they know”. I have included 5 different assessments that ask questions and present data in different ways.

I hope you find it a fun, rigorous, and meaningful way to get your students truly thinking about data and line plots! Selected answers included where applicable. Page count is approximate. The actual document has far more but some are different versions of certain pages.

What are teachers saying?

  • “LOVED this resource!! So easy to use as station rotations during our math time, and a great hands-on way to practice line plots and data collection/organization.”
  • “My students were having trouble understanding line plots. This hands on activity really helped them to make progress and gave them concrete understanding of the skill. I am so glad I bought this!”
  • “Amazing scaffolding included! My kids were so engaged and had so much fun! Thank you!”
  • “Line plots can be a struggle to teach but this resource has everything you need! Thank you!”
  • “WOW, lots of resources here, and lots of fun was had by my students. Thanks!”

Geometry is often one of the trickiest concepts for teachers to teach—and so often our textbooks and other resources either present things too quickly or in a way that simply isn’t engaging enough or with enough practice opportunities.

Geometry actually crosses content areas—both measurement and geometry! This bundled set of task cards comes in full page, four-per-page, and digital formats for maximum flexibility.

This series of task cards is geared toward helping teachers teach the geometry standards in a variety of ways to make sure students understand each standard in depth. Each set has 3-4 different problem types which help students learn in different ways.

What makes these cards even more flexible is that EACH of these different problem types could turn into its own minilesson. This is PERFECT for short, meaningful lessons–whether they be in person or virtual!

Each set contains a list of teaching tips and suggestions to help you turn these cards into a great lesson for your students!

WHAT SKILLS DOES THIS SET ADDRESS?

There are SIX SETS of cards in this series, all listed individually below. Click on any one of them to see more detail. Topics covered include:

  1. Symmetry concepts
  2. Identifying types of angles and drawing angles
  3. Using a protractor to measure and draw angles
  4. Solving angle problems (addition of angles, decomposing angles)
  5. Identifying and drawing points, line segments, rays, and lines
  6. Identifying parallel and perpendicular lines

Consider the following:

  • Use some of the cards as math warm ups or teaching points
  • Use as a review station
  • Use as an intervention tool for students needing more practice
  • Use as a cooperative or partner activity
  • Use some of the cards for quick assessment checks
  • Use in upper grades or with other students needing below-grade level interventions

Here are some options for you!

  • Print the cards (either full page or quarter page), laminate, and have students use wipe-off markers.
  • Print the cards in black and white to use as “worksheets” where students can draw directly on the paper.
  • Use colored task cards for visuals and the included black and white recording slides to record work.
  • Use spiral notebooks to sketch and record solutions.
  • Use digitally where students use drawing tools to make shapes and draw lines.
  • Project onto an interactive whiteboard where students can model their thinking on the screen.

Please download the preview to see exactly what you get! Remember, the different problem types are PERFECT for forming the foundation of minilessons. This entire series can be the backbone of your fourth grade geometry unit.
