Number Line Activities to Build Number Sense and Place Value to 1,000,000

Why use number line activities? A solid understanding of number sense and place value is absolutely critical as we move our students forward in their mathematical thinking. We often expose them to numbers in a variety of ways…using manipulatives, using 100’s charts, and so on.

One area that is often overlooked is the building of understanding of how numbers relate to each other and how they compare to other numbers on number lines.

In my attempt to really help my students understand place value AND develop their mathematical practices, I have developed these resources and share them with you now! THIS edition focuses on numbers through ONE MILLION.

What is included?

This resource has a number of different elements to help you tackle place value–including 8 pages of information, teaching tips, and photos of the resource in action!

It includes 65 ready-to-copy math journal problems (5 per page) that ask students to either identify a mark on a number line or to make a mark at a certain point on a number line. These are NOT meant to be exact answers—but for students to use their number sense to come up with reasonable solutions. What is CRITICAL is the second part—”Explain your thinking!”

Whether students work together or alone, the problems ask them to defend their solutions. There are problems at a variety of levels…you will notice that they start easier and get more sophisticated—including a set of pages where the number lines do not start at . Look through and see which problems are the right level of challenge for your class—and consider differentiating by giving different groups different problems.

Also included is a set of 12 pages that can be used as either homework or assessments! Students are asked to do the same types of problems as used in math journals, but are asked to work on them independently. The pages increase in difficulty as their number increases.

A simple rubric to help you assess how well your students are able to “Construct viable arguments” and a class checklist to record progress.

NOTE: This is a challenging resource geared toward helping grade 4-5 teachers “raise the rigor” of their math instruction. Differentiation tips are included!

Place Value Activities: Improving Place Value and Number Sense

This set of place value task cards combined with a differentiated game are a perfect way to move your students to a deeper, more thorough understanding of large numbers an place value by helping them “manipulate” the digits in the different places. Most math series do NOT spend enough time helping students see how numbers “change” in the different places, and these two resources do exactly that!

The first activity is a set of 24 task cards (complete with answer key!) which ask students to change numbers by altering digits in the different places. The first cards start with 3 digit numbers and gradually get larger and larger. The last 8 cards involve more complex changes—where the digit has to “cross” the . For example, for the number 513, taking away 3 “tens” would require breaking apart the hundreds to get more tens. The first 16 cards require no complex trading across places. These are great to really check place value understanding, precision, and direction following!

I have made these task cards in both color and black and white for ultimate flexibility. The cards get progressively more difficult as they go. Consider using them to differentiate centers, as whole class warm ups, or use the first 4-8 cards with an intervention group.

The second activity is the game “Presto Change-o” which is another way for students to work on altering numbers by “playing with” and increasing and decreasing digits in the different places. Draw a card and write it down. Spin both spinners and use the results to change the number on the card to the new number created when adding or subtracting For each round, the player with the larger changed number wins the round. The winner is the player who wins the most rounds.

I have included three versions of the game…for 4 digit numbers, and two variations for 6 digit numbers.

Standard and Expanded Form Place Value Task Cards Grades 3-5

Writing larger numbers can be tricky, and I found so many of my students unable to easily and fluently move between different forms of writing numbers to show their understanding of standard form, expanded form, and written form. I wanted task cards that could be used to throw under my document camera as warm ups, to use as math stations, or to use with an intervention group.

I also wanted a resource that would provide differentiated opportunities—so I added the second question on each card—the “What number is 3,000 more?” or other similar questions that show a deeper understanding of place value concepts.

Some of these are relatively easy (adding 2 more tens to 740 is easy) but others require mental “regrouping” (adding 2 more tens to 790 is trickier!). Also, numbers written in expanded form have some “terms” out of order (helps find misconceptions) and have missing numbers (ex. no “hundreds”).

It worked SO well! I used several of the cards with my class as warm ups, then used the rest of the cards in a center. I had six students who were struggling so I used the cards to work with them in an intervention group. Check out pictures in the preview to see more!

I included the task cards (all low ink–no color) in two sizes—half sheet and four to a page. I like the half sheet size if you plan on having students write directly on the cards with wipe off markers. If you plan on having them record their answer on the recording sheet (included) or in their notebooks, you may wish to use the quarter sheet task cards to save paper.

Why do you need a resource for fractions on a number line? A solid understanding of number sense and place value by using number lines is absolutely critical as we move our students forward in their fraction understanding.

We can’t overlook the importance of using number lines for fractions and decimals!

We often expose students to numbers (including fractions!) in a variety of ways…using manipulatives, using 100’s charts, and so on. One area that is often overlooked is the building of understanding of how numbers relate to each other and how they “fit” with other numbers.

For example, students may have a solid understanding of what “10” is and how to model it—but they don’t always realize what “10” means compared to other numbers…that 10 is half of 20…and double 5…and closer to than to 100 and so on!

What is included?

This resource has a number of different elements to help you tackle place value–including:

THIS bundle includes number lines that work from -1,000, another set for -1,000,000, and a third set that tackles fractions and decimals.

Place Value Task Cards for Grades 2 and 3 – Place Value Activities BUNDLE

Looking for help with place value and number sense? This bundle of THREE different sets of task cards is designed to help students build number sense and place value understanding related to 2, 3, and 4 digit numbers.

What are the three sets of cards that are included?

“CHANGING PLACES”: This set of 32 task cards asks students to take a starting number that they then “change” through a set of steps by adding and taking away from the different places. The cards get progressively more difficult throughout the set

“MYSTERY NUMBERS”: This set of 32 task cards asks students to find a “collection” of numbers that fit a certain set of place value rules. Perfect for helping students see that some problems have multiple solutions!

“EXPANDED FORM PLUS”: This set of 32 task cards asks students to look at numbers written in expanded, standard, and written form and to find which one of the three numbers doesn’t belong. A perfect way to practice place value in a new way while attending to precision and place value understanding.

Why did I create these task cards?

Often our math series only ask students to do the most simplistic place value activities such as putting in greater than or less than signs, putting a few numbers in order, or identifying numbers on a number line. In order to truly develop deep understanding, we must expose students to much more complex “play” with numbers.

Let these task cards help! Need support? Try using base 10 blocks or other manipulatives to model the process. Need extensions? Have students create their own problems!

I have made these task cards in both color and black and white for ultimate flexibility. The cards get progressively more difficult. Consider using them to differentiate centers, as a warm-up for the entire class, or use the easier cards with an intervention group.

I use task cards in a few different ways. I often model my thinking with a few cards, then use a few more in upcoming days as warm-ups, and then use the rest as a math center. You could also play a “scoot” type of game where students rotate to each card and solve them with partners. Don’t forget, cards can always be reused when reteaching. Need an extension? Have students try writing their own! I’ve included a blank set of cards for students to use!
