Reading Status of the Class and Reading Assessment Notes – Science of Reading

Taking “status of the class” and recording anecdotal reading notes during independent reading time is one of my favorite parts of the school day. With rigorous literacy standards and the Science of Reading movement, it is so essential to get to know our students as readers, to confer with them and coach them, and to make sure they are reading books that are a good fit.

This is a time when I conduct a mini-conference with each child…

a time to record what they are reading
to measure fluency and accuracy
to coach and guide
to celebrate accomplishments
to ask questions
to ask about home reading
to make book recommendations
for other students to hear about books other students are reading
and more!

The entire process takes less than 10 minutes but gives me a HUGE amount of information that helps me guide instruction and helps students reflect on their own reading behaviors and goals.

Reading Goal Student Bookmarks

“Use these reproducible bookmarks after conferring with students in their readers’ workshop or guided reading groups. Each page of 3 bookmarks reflects a different learning target you may set as a goal area for a certain student or small group. Students can mark their spots in their book and work on needed concepts at the same time! You will notice these goals do tie to Common Core Standards and can raise the level of rigor in your reading instruction. They are also a great way to communicate learning goals with families.

There are 16 different bookmarks included as well as a blank one for personalizing with other goals. Color copies are included as well as a more printer friendly version of each one.

Independent Reading Logs Set 2

Pick and choose from among these home and school reading logs to help your students track their reading, set goals, and improve their reading behaviors. As teachers move toward full implementation of the Common Core, solid independent reading behaviors will be critical to ensure students can sustain reading over extended periods of time. Using reading logs helps teachers know what students are reading, how much they are reading, and can serve as useful tools for conferring, for assessing, and for communicating with students and families.

This packet contains a number of information filled pages about the “how” and “why” of using independent reading logs, 20 different versions of reading log with several different focus areas, and 4 student self-assessments to help intermediate students become more reflective readers.

This set is nearly identical to set 1 except that is is HORIZONTALLY oriented and a little more “streamlined”. The content of the reading logs is similar. This is the “new and improved” version!

Ready Freddy: A Reading Response Resource for ANY Ready Freddy Book!

“Ready Freddy books are a wonderful resource to use with students who are relatively new to chapter books and who need work on sustaining comprehension over multiple chapters (each book has 8) as well has improving critical reading strategies and skills. There are dozens of Ready Freddy books in the series, and you can use this resource with each and every one! Use it over and over and change it up each time with the extra pages!

I love that it can be used with ANY of the Ready Freddy books…so you can use it with one student, with a group of students, with a number of students all reading different Ready Freddy books—or even with a class read aloud. I used it with a guided reading group–and then used some of the additional pages for a few students to work independently on OTHER books in the series!

The concepts covered are CRITICAL READING SKILLS—from character development to summaries to “proving” their thinking with the text. Get creative—but know that everything you need is right there, ready to copy and use. One of the unusual features is that the student response pages have the minilesson explained right at the top–so both teachers and students know what to be working on! It makes planning so easy–and helps students and families know exactly what learning is taking place.

Learning to use context clues to help reading comprehension is such a critical reading skill! This comes naturally to some–but for some students, explicitly teaching how to use context clues is essential.

Teaching inferring or “making inferences” is a part of every strong reading program. Making inferences is natural for some readers–but some need explicit practice. Add in working on sequence of events, and you have a perfect reading minilesson!

Making Inferences and Reading Fluency Task Cards Grades 3-5

This set of 24 making inferences and reading fluency task cards (yes, both!) is perfect to use as a practice opportunity in literacy centers or as an instructional tool when working with students needing extra practice in this area.

Cards are made with an easy-to-read font and are available both in color and black and white. Students can practice rereading using all the clues in the short texts to improve their oral reading skills.

The ability to read a text and use the author’s “clues” to help figure out how to read a text with fluency and expression is a critical reading skill. Tuning into bold words, punctuation, italicized words, emotion words (Ex. “She STORMED down the stairs,” can be read differently than “She TIPTOED down the stairs.”) With practice, readers can tune into these features to make their reading sound more professional. But wait! These cards can be used to work on inferring as well!

Reading Graphic Organizers – Fiction Texts Reading Responses – Print & Digital

As you know, the purpose of a reading graphic organizer is to help students make sense of information and organize it in a visible, usable fashion. This is so important when working on reading comprehension and written responses to reading.

Sometimes using an organizer is all we need from students—a way for them to represent the information we are asking for. Sometimes, however, we want students to organize information for other reasons…like to do a piece of writing. This resource was created to serve both needs.

I wanted a way for my students to be able to track their thinking about the texts they read, but also for them to be able to use those notes to complete a short piece of writing to show me their thinking and depth of understanding about a text.

The more I thought about it, the more it made sense, and the more I wanted to be able to be able to quickly consider what skill or learning target I wanted to focus on, and then have a low-ink (or digital) way to get students thinking—and then writing about texts.

How is this different than other sets of organizers? Aren’t they all the same?

Nope!

There are countless resources out there filled with different graphic organizers. This one is a little different for a few reasons.

★This set of 32 graphic organizers has teaching tips/mini lessons worked right into them to help teach the many components of FICTION reading! (hoping for a nonfiction version soon!)

★This resource has the print AND digital versions of these organizers so you can use them either way.

★This set also has a written component so students can use the organizer to jot down their thinking—but then can “write long’ about them to deepen their thinking and work on their writing skills in a meaningful way.

★These organizers are meant to dig deeply into rigorous standards and get students really thinking deeply about texts, not just fill in the blanks.

What should I be looking for?

When I ask students to write about texts, I am looking for a few things:

✔ Are they able to find examples in the text?

✔ Can they explain clearly?

✔ Can they write coherently?

✔ What is their “depth” of understanding?

✔ How reflective are they as they read?

✔ How much scaffolding or “coaching” do they need to make sense of the text?

✔ Does their written work seem to match their reading level?

✔ What instruction needs to happen to support them as readers and writers?

✔ Do the texts they are reading seem to be a good fit for them?
