This science task is geared toward helping the intermediate level student develop key STEM science/engineering “thinking skills” that will help build the foundation for more complicated scientific learning. As new science standards are implemented, “engineering” plays a prominent role—even at the elementary level!

This lesson can be done in one class period or stretched out over 2 if you wish to allow the students to go back and revisit their towers. If you do, use the “extension” page to record their new attempts! NOTE: Pages 7 and 8 look the same—one is U.S. Customary and the other metric!

Supplies are readily available—white copy paper, paperclips, tape, and scissors!

Get creative and have fun!

What is the task?

  • Your task is to work collaboratively to build the highest tower possible using only the materials listed above.
  • You do not need to use all the materials, but you may not use anything else.
  • Your tower must stand alone with no supports and may not lean against anything.
  • You will have to be able to move your tower to the measuring station so it must be durable and portable.

This lesson can be done in two or three class periods–3 if you if you wish to allow the students to go back and revisit their columns.

Supplies are readily available—white copy paper, paperclips, glue, and scissors!

Get creative and have fun!

What do students need to do?

Your task is to work collaboratively as “column engineers” to build the strongest column possible using only the materials listed below. You do not need to use all the materials, but you may not use anything else. You will be allowed to build 3 columns for your team to test. They may all have the same design or they may have different designs.

Your column must stand alone with no supports and may not lean against anything. You will have to be able to move your column to the testing station so it must be durable and portable. You will measure how much weight your column can support before it tips or crumples.

Looking for some new “kick” to your electricity unit? Check out this interactive science notebook electricity unit! My intent is that this resource can be used in whatever way you see fit! Whether you have an electricity textbook that you use, a hands-on science kit (like I do), or no resources at all, you should be able to customize these lessons and activities to meet your needs.

Just check the page of “What’s Included” to make sure the lessons I have included match your needs—and then have fun! The lessons can be done in the order I have included them—but they do NOT build off of each other so you can move them around and even skip those which do not fit your needs. Many of the lessons include interactive notebook components and have photos to show exactly how things CAN be done—but one size does NOT fit all . . . So get creative!

What do you get?

–LESSON: What do you know about electricity?

–LESSON: How do we use electricity?

–LESSON: How do we stay safe around electricity?

–LESSON: What are the parts of a light bulb?

–LESSON: What is a circuit? What are series and parallel circuits?

–LESSON: What are conductors and insulators?

–Suggested bulletin board/display ideas including ready-to-use letters to print and use.

–Vocabulary cards and pocket for notebook

–A “contract” for students to use to for independent electricity projects (enrichment or required)

–Selective exit slips and assessment options

Looking for some additional “life” for your skeletal system unit? Do you want to integrate science and literacy? How about incorporating some interactive notebook elements–without wasting too much paper or taking too much time? I think I can help.

My intent is that this resource can be used in whatever way you see fit! Whether you have a science textbook that you use, a hands-on science kit, a collection of books or other ideas–or no resources at all, you should be able to customize these lessons and activities to meet your needs.

Just check the page of “What’s Included” to make sure the lessons I have included match your needs—and then have fun! The lessons can be done in the order I have included them—but they do NOT build off of each other so you can move them around and even skip those which do not fit your needs.

Many of the lessons include interactive notebook components and have photos to show exactly how things CAN be done—but one size does NOT fit all . . .

I have geared this resource around 4 essential questions which form the foundation for my human body studies. They are:

*What are the jobs of the skeletal system?

*What are the parts of the skeletal system?

*What can go wrong with the skeletal system?

*How can we keep our skeletal system healthy?

I have tried to include just the right amount of content rigor for grade 3-5 students. This unit will form a nice foundation for later science work without being overwhelming.

What is included?

  • Suggested bulletin board/display ideas including ready-to-use letters to print and use.
  • Vocabulary cards and pocket for notebook
  • formative assessment ideas
  • one page “articles” for informational text reading practice (includes multiple choice questions for test prep as well)
  • interactive notebook components to use to record learning and thinking
  • clear teaching tips and suggestions
  • A “contract” for students to use for independent skeletal system projects (enrichment or required)
  • graphic organizers
  • extension ideas

I hope you find this useful!
