Reading Response Menu Project – A Week of Writing about Texts | Print & Digital

Getting students engaged in writing responses to reading can be difficult. We want them thinking and developing deep comprehension, but tackling lengthy “writing about reading” projects and essays can be tiring–and not very effective. I wanted an engaging way for students to write about reading AND show deep reading comprehension!

This response to literature menu TOTALLY nailed it!

I was looking for a way for my students to dig a little deeper into some of the texts we have studied in recent weeks during our historical fiction unit. What I decided to do could also be applied to ANY fiction studies—and my students LOVED these activities. I pull out some of these activities throughout the year to keep students engaged and to help me see their thinking.

Here is how my thinking unfolded…I wanted students to refine their understanding of comparing and contrasting (BIG in the CCSS) as well as to begin to understand the idea of “point of view” and seeing events in a story from different perspectives.

So…I modeled these concepts by reading a few picture books and talking about how the different characters “saw” the story unfold. We talked about what these characters might write in a diary or journal—and how these different journals might tell the same story with totally different emotions and feelings! We then dug into two chapter books we had read aloud and got ready to write about our reading!

We used a “menu” approach where I required TWO tasks and then students used writers’ workshop time to pick and choose from among the other six. They planned, revised, peer conferenced, and published!

Spring Bulletin Board Project – Book Review Bulletin Board – Spring Activities

This spring bulletin board project asks students to do a brief book review on a book they have read that they think will “GROW” on someone else! They will create a big paper flower to highlight their “mini book review”. As required in the Common Core and other rigorous standards, students need to justify their thinking as they evaluate their books. This makes an adorable door or bulletin board display for spring!

Included in this resource are directions, templates for the student projects, and decorative letters and accents to help spell two different phrases, “SPRING into a great book!” and “This book will really GROW on you!” I’ve also included a drafting page if you would like to use it–but writing a rough copy in a notebook works just as well.

There is room for creativity as well, but everything you need is right here! No color printer? No worries! The student project is easy to reproduce in black and white! Check out the preview for even more information or THIS BLOG POST for additional details!

Teaching Narrative Writing – An Introductory Narrative Writing Lesson

Narrative writing is actually one of my favorite things to teach…and helping students use narrative writing graphic organizers to plan their stories makes everything flow so much more smoothly! Narrative writing checklists and graphic organizers seal the deal!

Winter Bulletin Board Project | “Chilling with a great book!”

This winter bulletin board writing project asks students to do a brief book review on a book they have read that they think other students would like to “chill out” with! They will create a paper snowman to showcase their “mini book review”. As required in the Common Core, students need to justify their thinking as they evaluate their books. This makes an adorable door or bulletin board display for winter!

Included in this resource are directions with actual photographs, templates for the student projects, and decorative letters and accents to help spell three different phrases, “Chilling with a good book!”, “Chilling Out with a good book!”, or “Take the time to Chill Out with a good book!” There is room for creativity as well, but everything you need is right here! No color printer? No worries! The student project is easy to reproduce in gray tones and then accent with colored paper.

Are you as big of a fan of Number the Stars as I am? If you want your students to be able to cite text evidence, have deep comprehension, and study characters with NO PREP for you, I’ve got what you need to really dig into this amazing text.

This Number the Stars novel unit is a little different than others out there… there aren’t a ton of question pages… vocabulary in isolation… quizzes… reading worksheets… or projects. On Demand Writing Prompts Assessments – Easy-Grade – Print and Digital

This demand writing resource arose from a need I had to more frequently assess writing and measure students’ progress on a few key writing skills that our district writing rubric doesn’t spell out clearly. I found that these skills were going largely ungraded—and I wasn’t seeing my students make enough progress with their writing.

I knew I didn’t want to add MORE to my plate—but I knew I needed something. I decided to try a short (8 minutes!) demand writing prompt a few times a week. By making it short, I didn’t take away from instructional time, I am able to quickly score it and give feedback, and I can use it to pull strategy groups while I teach our district curriculum. I wanted the rubric right on the page as a reminder for students…much like my other writing prompt resources.

The difference? This is meant to be a quick snapshot—almost like an entrance slip before a writing class. I figure I can give up 8 minutes a few times a week if it will help me to help my students, right?

I figure by giving students a starting topic, we wouldn’t waste time thinking of topics either—and each topic should be something that students really can write a decent “quick write” about. This isn’t meant to be a full essay—just a quick write to check some important skills.

Teaching Dialogue: Writing & Punctuating Dialogue Task Cards | Print and Digital

Teaching dialogue can be a real challenge. I wanted a way to engage my students in how to read and write dialogue and to see the power characters’ words can have. I wanted them to be able to get practice with punctuating and writing dialogue WITHOUT using boring dialogue practice sheets—and with doing “real writing”.

I also really wanted to be able to tie this to critical reading and have my students study the dialogue that real authors use and notice the “mood” created with good dialogue, so I used these cards as a springboard for that as well. My students love using them, and I know yours will as well.
