Fractions can be tricky—not because students aren’t capable, but because misconceptions about fractions are incredibly common. In this Day 2 lesson from my Fraction Concepts series, the goal is to intentionally surface those misconceptions while helping students develop clear, accurate fraction language. By creating space for discussion, questioning, and mathematical talk, students start to refine their thinking and build a stronger foundation for understanding fractions in meaningful ways.

Indeed, things got even more interesting as my work with fractions unfolded on day 2!  For those of you who read my first fraction post, I discussed how we used paper folding to get our fraction concepts unit “launched”, and we ran out of time to finish the investigation before digging into some fraction misconceptions.  I gave them another 25 minutes today to work on folding their different fractional amounts and then asked them to spend some time writing in their math notebook on any of the following:

What did you notice?
Was there anything challenging?
What was easy?

 

What patterns did you discover?

First I gave the students “alone” time to write and then let them go compare notes with their partner from the investigation…

After the students had their work time, we had a discussion about the things that they noticed…I jotted down their ideas on the Smartboard…

What really stood out to me was the very NEBULOUS (vocabulary word!) math language I was hearing.  A phrase that kept coming up was “small fractions” as in “It was harder to fold the small fractions.”
So, being the pesky and annoying teacher that I am, I presented this question to the class:

So, I didn’t let the students talk . . . I just said that I was hearing MANY students use this phrase, so I thought we had better make sure we all knew what it meant.  I asked each student to write the So, answer to that question on a post it note and come slap it on the easel.

And–seriously–I only wish I had taken some photos of the notes up close.  SERIOUSLY!  I had everything from . . .

to

At this point, any concerns I had about backing up this far and moving this slowly were GONE!  I read off the notes to the students and then asked what we had learned about what a “small” fraction is and one of my delightful yet very shy students called out, “ABsolutely nothing!” and we all laughed hysterically.

 

What next?

So where do we go from here?  I reminded the students about how we have been talking about the Common Core and how important it is to use precise mathematical language.  I asked if “small fraction” was precise enough that anyone else would know what we meant. . . and we had complete agreement that it was not.  Next, I asked them if, on our 4, 3, 2 , 1 rubric we were evaluate how clearly we communicated, we agreed that all our post its were 1’s with a few 2’s sprinkled in . . . until “T” asked, “If there really isn’t an answer, how could someone get a 4 on this?”

 

Have I mentioned how much I love fourth graders?  He honestly asked–and honestly wanted to know!  I told him I had to think about it. . . always a good strategy for the tricky questions!  Don’t answer too soon!

 

Deep fractional thinking

So I set the students to work on a little activity to set them up for tomorrow’s lesson…I asked them to work completely alone to answer the following question:
My favorite fraction lesson!
If it is too small to read, the question asks “Is this shape divided into fourths?  Explain your thinking.”
I let them work for a few minutes and then on their way out to recess made them commit to either a “yes” or a “no” response . . . and it will be our kickoff “debate” tomorrow!  Remember, one key element of the Standards for Mathematical Practice is the ability to explain one’s own work and to critique the reasoning of others . . . so tune in tomorrow to see how it all shakes out!

 

After they worked for a few minutes we gathered back together to talk about T’s question . . . is it possible to get a 4 on a question with no answer?   Maybe I should save that for another blog post . . . this one is already plenty long–but I told him that yes, I do believe you can get a 4 on a question with no answer.  I reminded him that we are stressing explaining our thinking, and we could certainly do that with this question.  I modeled something sort of like this (this was done aloud, not in writing . . . I’m just trying to give you the gist of it)

 

“I know that there are different ways to look at the idea of being small.  Some people might think the numbers should be small–like in 1/2.  Some people might look at the size of the pieces to determine what a “small” fraction is.  Still others might think a small fraction is one where you only look at one piece of a whole–like 1/3 is small where 2/3 is big.  So for the question “What is a small fraction?”, it is very important to understand that there might be more than one way to answer it.”

Today we kicked off our fraction work, and every time I start this unit I’m reminded just how important it is for intermediate students. Fractions show up everywhere in our standards. The understanding students build here truly matters! I like to take the time to document the thinking, the misconceptions, and the little moments of clarity that happen along the way. Today’s focus?  Fraction folding!

 

I always invite conversation around how we teach fractions because there are so many ways to help students make sense of them. As I walk through our work, I try to share photos, student examples, and the reasoning behind each step. I do this partly to keep myself honest about my choices, and partly because I love hearing what has worked well in other classrooms, too. If you have ideas or resources that have been successful for you, I’m always eager to learn from them.

Teaching fractions throughout the year

One thing our district math team emphasized when we built our pacing was the importance of giving fractions more than a single stretch of instructional time. We built in two units. We do one one now to develop foundational understanding. Then we built in a later one that connects fractions, decimals, and the more sophisticated ideas students will need. That structure has really shaped how I approach the beginning of this work.

Today I started by asking students to reflect on what they already know about fractions and to rate their overall confidence (using our 4  3  2  1 ) scale (Click here to revisit earlier blog post about this!) and the results were quite amazing!  In a ten minute writing time, I got to witness a number of misconceptions, poorly explained reasoning, and a bunch of “3’s” and “4’s” in confidence!

Good thing I had planned on starting slowly!  Today we started our new math notebooks, and I explained to the students that we are “raising the rigor” one level more. The poor things have heard this all year!  I told them we are going to work hard to use our new notebooks to both record our thinking, our practicing, and our new learning.

I’ll blog more about this later as it unfolds!  For today, we started the section we called “Fraction Concepts” and even talked about what the word “concept” means.  Fascinating!  I told the students that our job through this unit would be to determine some things we could determine to be “true” about fractions and that we would be working our way through a number of these “truths” during the unit.

Today’s fraction “truth”

Today’s “truth” involved ensuring that students understand that fractions represent equal parts of something. (I didn’t really want to use the term “whole” yet–I don’t really like to treat fractions of “objects” and “sets” differently until I have to!) I also told them that we would be spending some time creating equal parts.

Then, I put the students into pairs (I love popsicle stick picking!) and gave them each 3 minutes to find a classroom object that was either a square, rectangle, or circle. The item needed to be bigger than a deck of cards and smaller than a book.  Each team was then assigned a color of paper and we got started.

The Task

With your partner, trace and cut out your shape.  You will need many of these as the investigation unfolds.  Your job is to find ways to divide your shape into equal parts. . . first in two equal parts, then three, and so on.

I made sure that we had plenty of objects accessible in a variety of sizes. You could also have cardboard tracers if that is more appropriate for your learners.

I then showed the students the following charts–each is labeled “halves”, “thirds”, “fourths”, and so on.  I used pieces of bulletin board paper, but you could use construction paper or even just set your shapes on the floor by the headers.  As they discovered a way to fold their shape, they were asked to put it on the correct chart.  I was on the prowl for work that was not accurate and precise.

Each poster is labeled with the word for the fractional part–I will use the words and different symbols interchangeably throughout the unit.  NOTE:  The chart does NOT say “1/3” because we were not identifying 1 out of 3 parts.

FRACTION MISCONCEPTION ALERT! Make sure students are aware of the difference between drawing “thirds” and drawing 1/3.  Watch for this and help students see the difference.

Digging In

Students dug into their work and did need some frequent reminders about using straight edges, working carefully, and so on. (I know–shocking!) That being said, they were very engaged and thoughtful.  I heard some pretty nifty stuff like:

“Hey–as you try to get more pieces, the pieces get smaller!”
and
“Man–it’s a lot harder to fold the odd numbered pieces!”
and
“If you fold it in half and then in half again, each half gets cut in half!”

As the period unfolded (and it became clear that this was going to be a TWO DAY investigation!), our charts began to fill up and things moved a little faster. I was walking around and taking notes about who was struggling and about observations I wanted to share with the whole class.

The charts started to fill…first halves and thirds, then fourths and eighths…we’ll see how it “unfolds” tomorrow!  Got to love a little math humor, right?

What’s next?

Tomorrow we will finish up our investigation and then ask ourselves if we have discovered any new “truths” to record in our notebooks.  I am pretty confident that my students would have been able to answer correctly if given a sheet of “shaded fractions” to identify.

 

That being said, today’s activity showed me that many students are maybe missing some very critical understandings about equal parts and about patterns that arise when dividing shapes.  I’m pretty sure that the work we will do over the next lessons is going to be very important as we build a foundation for the more advanced skills coming soon.

 

This is the difference between asking students to REPRESENT and MODEL fractions rather than just identifying fractions on a piece of paper.  This activity deepens understanding, gets students noticing and talking, and helps you as the teacher to notice misconceptions and to better understand where things might be going wrong.

Finally, if you aren’t familiar with what your standards require, I would encourage you to dig in and follow along with us as we try to construct meaning over the next few weeks!

One more thing…

The terms “numerator” and “denominator” did come up in our lesson today.  I made a poster to represent this and hung it on our math board.  You may need to introduce the terms over the next days if your students do not bring them up!

One thing I know to be true about fourth graders and intermediate students is that there is no ONE thing true about fourth graders and intermediate students. It seems like the longer I teach, the more compelled I am to find ways to group and individualize for students, but I have to admit–it is NOT easy for me. It isn’t that I don’t KNOW who the students are or what to do. It’s that whole “structure” or organization piece for a good reader’s workshop.

Reader’s Workshop Routines

One area where I do feel more confident is establishing a culture for independent reading in my classroom.  I really know how to establish routines and procedures to make my reading time run smoothly so students get the most “bang” for their buck. Students need to be taught HOW to be independent.  It simply isn’t intuitive for all of this.  This is especially true for those strugglers who have received a LOT of interventions–often have some learned helplessness. I spend the first few weeks of school working very hard to teach routines and processes and to get my students more independent and successful with their reader’s workshop time.

I went back to my copy of this book to read a little more about one of the key elements of the CCSS–Standard 10. It is one that is inherently vague and I think it’s easy to gloss over it and say, “I do that.” But do we?

Pathways to the Common Core book

So how can we REALLY teach this standard?

When I went back into the text, it talks about the standards 1 and 10 as being the “sides” of the ladder holding up all of the other standard “rungs”. I kind of like that analogy. We must help students read more complex texts in order to accomplish all that the CCSS (and other sets of standards) wants us to–but it won’t happen without careful scaffolding by us. Let’s be honest…we meet with kids in small groups. We do picture walks. We preteach vocabulary.

WAIT! Maybe WE do too much! After all, we can’t sit next to them and “frontload” their standardized tests, can we? Their work in the upper grades?  Their emails when they have jobs?

So . . . I have been on a quest in recent years to really and deliberately TEACH my students how to be independent workers, thinkers, readers, and problem solvers. I really want them to be reflective about their own needs. They need to know how to seek out help when they need it.  Similarly, I want them to pick “just right” books and know when they are not making good book choices. I want them to set goals and reflect on them. They need to study their own behaviors and work to make changes.

Help for Reader’s Workshop!

I think it’s why I love doing reading logs and status of the class so much–they help students be reflective on what they are doing. We’ve all had the students who wanted to read Harry Potter and weren’t ready…and we’ve all had those who are reading Magic Treehouse. Only Magic Treehouse. Again. We need to be deliberate in how we help those kiddos make their book choices.

Some things we need to take into consideration:
  • Are we organizing our beginning of the year minilessons to focus on these critical lessons?
  • Do we have visual displays and anchor charts that we create with students?  Do we refer BACK to them as we teach and guide?
  • Are there systems we can put in place to monitor what and how students are reading?
  • Do we set goals for and with our students?
  • Do we find ways to show students HOW to preview and select books?
  • Is our own enthusiasm for reading evident?
  • Are we helping students “see” what independent reading should look like–and why it is so important?

I’ve taken some of these critical concepts and put them together in a little package. You might find this helpful if you feel you want to change up how you “launch” your independent reading for the year. There are TONS of amazing resources out there–but I know what has worked for me and I have finally put it all together. I hope you like it!

There are a billion resources out there that are stressing the importance of using “mentor texts” to help students develop as readers and writers.  I couldn’t agree more!  Studying what other writers do can not only help our students become better writers–but better readers as well!  In fact, I think it’s so important to dig into these texts that we keep an ongoing list in my class of what we have read so we can refer back to them.  Here is our chart from midway through our school year . . .

It’s funny how some people have misconceptions about the use of picture books in the classroom . . . how we must be pushing our students into more rigorous literature . . . how we don’t have time for those picture book “shared reading” experiences.  Really?  Have you READ some of the wonderful picture books out there?  These are NOT your toddler “going to bed” books!  These are texts rich with language, filled with inferential thinking, and–if presented well–examples of what excellent writing can be!  They have interesting beginnings and endings . . . they are alive with descriptive and figurative language . . . they provide us with the opportunities to get a glimpse into 

. . . a character’s life 
. . . or a time in history
. . . or a special place

They are concise with their words–using just enough to tell the story and help us “see” in our minds what really matters.  They make us think.

Wait a minute–isn’t that what we want our students doing in their own writing?  Their independent reading?  YES!

So–I am on a quest to find the BEST mentor texts out there!  I want to get these rich texts in the eyes, ears, and hearts of students everywhere!  I have started by digging into one of my favorite authors–Eve Bunting–who has written countless picture AND chapter books that accomplish all that I have described above.  

If you haven’t read her books–I beg you to do so and to share them with your students.  The CCSS is asking us to provide our students with rich opportunities to study literature, and Bunting’s books are a perfect vehicle for that.  If you haven’t used picture books in your classroom often, I have created a series of resources that might help you out . . . with more to come if it seems like people like them.  I’ve called my new series “Mentor Text Moments”–because I want you to share these texts with your students and have some of those deep discussions and “moments” with them!  

The resources have some discussion questions that might help you as well as a list of tricky words and phrases that might trip up your English Language Learners and other students with less rich vocabulary.  I have provided the discussion prompts in multiple formats so you can use them in readers notebooks . . . on printable sheets to use to assess students’ thinking . . . or just to use to enrich discussions.  I have also included 2 graphic organizers with each to extend the story and your students’ thinking–as well as a rubric to help you begin to assess the level of thinking against the Common Core.  Interested?  I have put resources for 6 different Eve Bunting texts in my store as well as a bundled set of all 6 if you are interested in that.  I’ll include the link to the bundle below.

What I REALLY want, though, is for you to share out YOUR favorite picture books that you use in your classroom!  Maybe we can all add some new titles to our collection!  Let’s see if we can get a good list going below . . . I’ll start!

“Saturdays and Teacakes” by Lester Laminack is a touching story about a tradition with a young boy and his grandmother.  If you study “memoirs”, this is a must have text! It is filled with descriptive language and drops hints as to what life was like a generation ago!

Back into the division trenches today with one of my favorite “kick off” activities!  I love it when a piece of literature can spark a lesson, and this is no exception.  Marilyn Burns turned me on to this idea a few years back, and I have taken the ideas in her lesson and expanded it to really challenge my students.  The lesson unfolds over a few days–I am going to try to paint the picture for you!

Are you familiar with this book?

We start by reading the text and the students immediately pick up on the division concept presented within. They start to chatter as I read and make predictions about what is going to happen next.  For those of you who don’t know it, Mom makes cookies to share with the two kids.  They are each prepared to eat six–until the doorbell rings and two more people are there to share.  They are satisfied with four each–until the doorbell rings.  You get the picture.  Fortunately, right when TOTAL CRISIS is about to strike, Grandma shows up with more!
I use the time to review exactly how to “write” division.  We talk about the different symbols that are used, some of the “fancy words” like divisor and dividend, and review the concept of splitting into equal parts.  I then introduce one of two ways for the students to “Mathematically Retell” the story.  Some years I have them make a little flip book (see my quick mock up below) and other years I do a bigger “Cartoon” style layout.

What we do is this . . . we make the first box a “title” box, retell the story in the next 4 boxes using words, pictures, and/or mathematical symbols and number sentences.  The kids had a blast retelling the story, and some got VERY creative with their sketching!  Being the math-smart teachers that you are, you realize that I have only addressed the first 5 out of 8 boxes. . . so here goes.
The 6th box is for them to show what happens when Grandma comes.  This is a little tricky for many–they easily figure out that the mom made 12 cookies.  When Grandma comes, I tell them that she brought 18 MORE cookies.  By the time she arrives, there are 12 people waiting to share cookies, so they do have some discussion before tackling it.  The two misconceptions?
1.  They only address the 18 Grandma brought when figuring out how many cookies everyone gets. . . they forget the original 12!
2.  They get stumped when it doesn’t work out evenly!  This is usually pretty temporary, and they start dividing the cookies in a variety of ways.
The final two boxes are for the students to continue the story–THEY get to decide how many cookies Grandma brings!  This is a great way to differentiate!  I worked with a few strugglers by suggesting numbers that worked out well while others were VERY happy to load Granny up with a big pile!

I love to watch how students’ minds work, so I snapped a few photos of several different ways I saw them representing the sharing!  I was on the lookout for incorrect use of symbols (Found one who wrote 6 divided by 12), those who were really struggling with the concept of equal parts (grabbed some counters to model the sharing), and those who didn’t really understand the 30 divided by 12 problem.  We hashed through it, did some sharing as a class, and then I picked a few to show their final two boxes up on the Smartboard.
It was a fun kick off–and we continued the “cookie theme” for the next few days.  I’ll fill you in more later!  Have a great night . . .

I spent the day at a regional music competition watching my son and countless other students show off their hard work and practice. Some achieved their ultimate goal of qualifying for the state contest–others left disappointed. What struck me as I volunteered for the afternoon was the judging. After each student or group performed, the judge walked through their scoring sheet pointing out what they had done well and what they could refine. I heard all sorts of comments like

“What you want to see is your elbow looking like this.” (shows the student a position)
“Listen to the sound my tongue makes–it is the sound you want to make.”
“You need to move your third finger like this. Good–do you see how much clearer that sound is?”

What was the judge doing? Giving feedback to try to get each musician closer to the desired goal. As teachers, we do this all day long. Research clearly states that the better and more immediate our feedback, the more our students will learn, so we MUST get better at it! Watch for more reflections on this in upcoming weeks. For today, I have a favor for you! As you know, I LOVE teaching math–but what I don’t like to do is assign a “score” for the work students do. I know we need to remember that grading is really the least important kind of feedback we can give–unless that feedback can be built into the score. I have been working on a way to try to create a problem-solving rubric that will help me AND my students have a clearer understanding of what “4” level math is! (We grade on a 4 point scale).

I wanted to create something that would address at least some of the Standards for Mathematical Practice, be easy to use, be flexible enough to use in many ways, and both simple and complete. This has not been an easy task! The document I have created asks students to reflect on their work in three areas:

1. Math Strategies
2. Precision “Plus”
3. Clear Explanations

I think it is really important for our students to realize that math is WAY more than getting the correct answer, so the document I have created downplays this. I have worked to define what a “4” would be in each of these areas and am hoping to use it with my students in a variety of ways. . . after team problem solving activities . . . after looking at a problem/problems they solved independently . . . as a self-assessment after paging through their math journals . . . and more!

I would love for YOU to try it out too! Let me know your thoughts–does it work? Could it be more clear? Are there other uses for it? What would make it better? Let’s work together to try to create a document that can really serve to help “coach” our students toward better problem solving.

Well . . . I promised a little update on the problem solving from the other day, so here goes!

What I often do toward the end of a unit is provide students with a class period or two to work collaboratively or on their own on an assortment of word problems.  Some of the problems are right at the level I would expect them to be able to do and others “push” and help them work on their “problem attack” and perseverance.  While they work, I can circulate and coach as they get started–but then my real goal is to be able to pull small groups and individuals to work on “issues” that have come up in recent lessons.

During this round of problem solving, I wanted to pull students who are still “iffy” on equivalent fractions, on comparing fractions, and on addition/subtraction with like denominators, so I got my collection of problems ready so the students would be focused while I pulled groups.

Here is one way I organize the problems:

This is a little cheap “tent” pocket chart that I think I got a few years ago at “The Bullseye Store”  It has those pockets on both sides.

So . . . on each of my two problem solving days, I did a 15 minute review minilesson to keep cycling back through those concepts covered over the last weeks and then I sent my students off to work in their math notebooks on the variety of problems.  I DO give a little “problem talk” about the problems (8 choices this time) so the students know who the problem is about (often students in the class) and what is happening.  In this collection there was a friendship bracelet problem (I KNEW which 3 girls would make a beeline for that one), a “travel team” soccer problem, a kitten problem, a candy store problem, a “Training for a 5K” problem . . . you get the picture.  Students often gravitate toward problems with topics that interest them no matter what the math content is!  I will also give a warning if I think the problem is particularly challenging or one that I call a good “warm up” which is the sign to those who are hesitant to TRY THAT ONE FIRST!

Drawing pictures to solve the problem . . . notice the use of highlighter to highlight key information.  This is the first class I have ever had that likes that as a strategy.

This student tried problem 6 and then decided to abandon it for now . . . we compare abandoning problems to abandoning books.  You shouldn’t have to do it very often, but sometimes it is the best decision.

This student was stumped!  I spent some time talking with her and then found another student doing the same problem . . . 

Together they talked through it and came up with two strategies to try–both worked!  They were so excited!

The one thing that got me super excited during this time . . . I had just finished with a small group when one of my “fraction challenged” students came up to me with a question about her problem.
The problem states that Mara and her 3 friends ordered pizza and ate 2 1/2 of them.  They all ate the same amount–what fraction of a pizza did each girl eat?  She had drawn a picture and really felt like she had found a way for each girl to get the same amount–but she had no idea WHAT that amount was.  Check out her solution–brilliant, right?  She drew the 2 1/2 pizzas, assigned each girl a number (1-4) and started splitting the pizza up.  She knew each girl could get 2/4 but they would have to all split the remaining half of a pizza–so she split THAT into 4 pieces.  She couldn’t quite figure out how much that added up to be.
I sat and listened to her reason through the problem and I noticed several other students starting to hover around (very typical . . . I tell them that smart learners tune in to others’ lessons, so I encourage this!) so I asked if any of them thought they could help.
We threw her problem up on the Smartboard. . . 
Then asked for volunteers to go up with her and talk through it . . . this student tried to help her see that each of the girls WOULD get 2/4 of a pizza AND 1/8 of a pizza BUT. . . 
When it came time to do the math . . . 
Something less than perfect happened.  I felt my heart sink until I heard another little voice chime in and say  . . . 
“Hey!  Remember . . . when you add fractions you have to have the same denominator!  I think you should turn all the pieces into eighths.”
. . . and so she did.  She came up and divided all the fourths into eighths and the THREE of them collectively shouted out “FIVE EIGHTHS!”.  At this point, 8 students had gathered while the others worked.
High fives went around the group and they all rushed back to their notebooks to record their thinking.  
Victory.
Common Core fractions?  CHECK
Standards for Mathematical Practice?  CHECK
Excitement about math?  PRICELESS

I know I gave you all a fraction word problem teaser yesterday, but I’m going to hold off and include that in tomorrow’s post.  Today what I want to share is something I did for about 15 minutes after math class was over.

Before this unit, I printed a list of the Common Core “learning targets” rewritten in kid-friendly language for my students.  We had looked at this list as our unit started and made little folders to keep them in.

Throughout the last few weeks, I have been giving the students exit slips and pulling them for extra help based on their results.  This is the method I typically use . . . we often go through 6-12 exit slips in a unit as I take the temperature of the group to know where to head with my large group lessons and who needs to be pulled for small group or one-on-one work.
Today we passed out all 7 of the exit slips we have done so far and we studied them and cross-checked them with the learning targets on the blue sheet.  As we discussed what each target meant, I showed an example on the Smartboard to make sure they knew what I was talking about and the students “self-assessed” with a plus to mean “I know it so well I could teach others.” or a check to mean “I know it well enough to do it on my own.” or a minus to mean “I am not feeling confident YET.”  (YET is a big word with me . . . not “I can’t do it!” but “I haven’t learned how to do this YET.”)
Students then looked at their exit slips and decided how they lined up with their plus, check, and minus marks.  Many students were shocked at some of their earlier exit slips and were excited to be able to say “I know how to do that NOW!”–which is exactly what we want!
When we finished reflecting, we packed them all up in the folder and put them away.  We will do this one more time on Friday with the remaining exit slips and then I will send the entire folder home for students to “teach” their families as part of their review for their summative assessment.  I ask them to show their parents their formative work, to try some practice problems at home and put them in the folder, and then have the parent sign the folder and send it back to school.  This really helps parents know what is expected, what the problems look like, how their child is doing, and what THEY can do to help.  It sure makes a difference; my students should be as ready for the summative assessment as they developmentally can be!

Today was a math rotations day in grade 4 . . . I started the day with a minilesson and then we broke up into three math groups to rotate around the following centers:
–“teacher time”
–problem solving
–</>/= activity
Today’s minilesson focused on “composing” and “decomposing”  using unit fractions, and I was hopeful that it would go smoothly.  I was fairly confident based on the work we have done over the last few weeks that the students would easily manage this concept, and my students did not disappoint me.
We reviewed the idea of “unit fraction” and used the fraction bars in Kidspiration to model different ways to build fractions.  We talked about how you can build or “compose” new fractions with unit fractions (which I also call counting fractions…just like we count WHOLE numbers, we can count FRACTIONS too!). 

We then tied the fraction bars to a more traditional adding and subtracting notation—we modeled by counting unit fraction groups to add and by crossing out fractions to subtract.  Students seemed to be really understanding, so I felt ready to send them off to do our math rotations.
Here is our rotation board:
(I’ve flipped the top cards backward to hide the names).  Today’s groups were picked based on needs—I knew that I wanted to differentiate the “teacher time” rotation.  Some days my groups are mixed ability–it all depends on what I am trying to accomplish.  For most of the investigations we have done during this unit, my groups are entirely mixed by gender, ability, and so on.
So here were our rotations in  nutshell!
1.  The “teacher time” rotation was with me.  We worked on reviewing the material taught in the mini lesson by having students try different combinations of addition and subtraction in their notebooks.  For my strugglers, we started really slow and brought the Smartboard back up with the fraction bars so we could make the tie.  By the time they were finished, we had written all sorts of different equations with addition and subtraction with like denominators.  We drilled in the concept that we can only add and subtract fractions with equal parts–or else we need to do some extra work!  We showed how adding 1/2 and 1/4 cannot possibly be 2/6.  We worked to come up with many equations that equaled “5/8” such as …
1/8 + 2/8 + 2/8 
and 
7/8 – 2/8 
and 
4/8 + 1/8 
and so on.  
The other two groups were ready to move beyond this.  I started by adding in both improper fractions and mixed numbers for them and things seemed to be moving pretty smoothly.  I asked them to find many equations with the solution 1 3/4 and they handled that as well.  I then decided to work on true/false problems with them so I threw out problems such as 
5/8 + 2/8 < 3 x 1/3  True or False?
and
4 1/4 – 3 3/4 > 1/2  True or False?
The students handled the multiplication with ease–they have such good number sense that they realize that three “1/3’s” is a whole–no computation required!
We then started playing more with improper fractions and the students tried writing problems to stump each other–tons of fun and very developmentally appropriate for each group.  
2.  The second rotation was a free explore station with fraction cards and <, >, and = cards.  I gave the students a number of different ways to interact with the cards…
–they could flip two cards over and decide which symbol would go between them
–they could flip 5 cards and put them in order smallest to largest
–they could flip two cards over and find 2 more cards that would fit between them
–they could come up with their own sequencing practice
And practice they did!  Each time I asked this group to rotate, they MOANED!  Can you believe?  They MOANED that they had to stop sequencing fractions!  I heard some fantastic discussion and some very creative thinking.  One group even decided to try to take a larger fraction card and find smaller ones that they could “decompose” the larger one into.  Really?  So much fun!  For those of you who have purchased the fraction sequencing set, this is one of the activities in that resource.  I will include it in the unit as well.

3.  The final rotation was a problem solving station.  Because I felt the students have enough number sense and addition/subtraction skills now, I was ready to send them off to try to tackle some word problems with fractions.  I will include these problems in my unit, but for those of you who aren’t interested in purchasing the big unit in a few weeks (I promise I will work as hard as I can to get it done in the next 1-2 weeks), the set of word problems IS available in my store now.  I will put the link at the bottom of this post.  I let the students buddy up if they wanted.  I was super pleased with what I saw!  I will save one example of some great teamwork for another post!

So, I hope you get a taste for one way I organize my math time . . . many of my lessons have been very “investigation” oriented–today was a more “guided math” approach which allowed me to really dig in and see how far certain students can be pushed.  Tomorrow–more problem solving and small group pulling based on the 3 exit slips I have given this week.  I have a few petunias who need a little more work with equivalent fractions and comparing fractions–so while the class has rotations tomorrow, I will be pulling small groups instead of having a “teacher time” rotation.

It is getting close to the end of our fractions unit . . . and I am trying to reflect on what more I need to accomplish!  I am really seeing students (for the most part) having an “ease” with fractions, with equivalence, and with some of the “big picture” ideas.  I know I want to dig into some problem solving with addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, and I want to throw some more “traditional” exit slips at them to see how well they do on more computation-based tasks as well.

Today I asked the students to solve some quick equivalency problems (3/4 = ? /16) and so on.  17 of my students aced it, 3 of them missed one (fact mistakes . . . AYE!  So many fact mistakes!!!), and 2 of them seem to still really not understand the concept.  Tomorrow–I will pull the 2 and go back to some paper folding to try to connect to the computation and see where they are missing the boat.

So . . .  today!  What did we do?  I flashed the following direction on the Smartboard:

I split the students into four color groups (based on the color of their chart paper–totally randomly handed out colored chips to assign groups).  Each piece of chart paper had a stack of papers on it.
I told the students to move to their station and to get to work.  They looked at me with puzzled looks.  No one said a word, but their little faces said, “LADY–you are LOSING it.  What do you want us to DO?”
I smiled and shrugged.  I told them true problem solvers would just dig in.
And so they did.
This activity is one of the ones I have in my Hands On Fractions set . . . and I will include it as a part of my fraction unit based on these blog posts.  You could most certainly create this yourself!  What the students found at their station:
–a set of cards labeled “Close to 0”, “Close to 1/2”, “Close to 1” and so on 
–a set of fraction cards
–6 blank “my fraction” cards
Immediately, the students started sorting and organizing.  As always, I loved sitting back and eavesdropping and spying.  It was delightful to see that I now have VERY few students who just sit back and need encouragement to jump in.  Our hard work at getting everyone involved and feeling safe has paid off!  These were big groups–5 or 6 students–so they really needed to listen to each other.  For the first 10 minutes, all I did was observe.
All groups worked to organize their “close to” cards first. . . 
This group started with a linear number line until one student suggested they made two rows to fit it all on the chart paper.

This group immediately put them in order from smallest to largest–something I thought would be obvious. I was wrong!  Two of the four groups did NOT put them in order from smallest to largest!  One went largest to smallest and the other went . . .  ummmmm . . . “creative”?

As the teams began to sort their cards into the correct area, I noticed a pattern with their cooperation.  Each team seemed to be functioning well and work was being done.  HOWEVER . . . looking closely, I realized that really each team was functioning like 5 individuals sitting next to each other.  It was like parallel play–for math!  Each student was taking a card and announcing its correct placement and then grabbing for another card–no discussion, no questioning.
I decided it was time to intervene; the whole point of this activity was to really discuss why each fraction belonged where it did–these were not all easy answers!  I asked the students to stop their work and explained to them what I noticed.  I asked them to take a few minutes to talk with their team about how they could improve their teamwork, and then we shared ideas.  I sent them back to work and saw MUCH better work!

I saw students pointing.  I heard students debating.  I heard really cool stuff that we have been working on for the last few weeks!  Things like . . . 
“It HAS to be larger than one because the numerator is larger than the denominator!”
and 

“It is closer to 1/2 because 16/30 is only one thirtieth away from 15/30 which is equivalent to 1/2.  That’s way closer than to one whole.”
and
“4/9 is really less than half because 1/2 of nine would be four and a half.  This one only has 4 ninths–so it is less than half.”
Pretty neat, eh?
So after they had worked for quite a while, I noticed some teams breaking out the “my fraction” cards and making their own.  Can you believe–not a single student asked me for a single direction all day?
I was so glad that I put these in the lesson. . .  it was a great way to differentiate (not all groups got 6 of them made) and I could see how some students worked to try to get one in each category and so on.  When I felt it was time to move on, I had the students rotate from group to group and study their work.  Rules?  Critique but do not touch.  Be ready to share.

And it should be no real shock to you that my students quickly picked out the ones they saw that were different from what they had done.  I sat back and listened to the really nifty discussions and “proofs” they were using.
When they had seen all 4 groups, I flashed photos on the Smartboard from each group and we talked about “issues” we had seen.  Students from different groups defended their answers, explained that they thought they were right but when they saw other groups with different answers, they thought more and now wanted to change their answers, and then we had a few we had to tackle more in depth.
This student wasn’t pleased that the 14/10 was in the “close to 1” instead of “close to 1 1/2”.  He did a great job explaining that the extra 4/10 was only 1/10 away from 5/10.  The purple group agreed and said they would move it.  Another student commented on the fact that a few posters had the groups kind of blending together and that it was hard to tell which fraction went with what.  She then smugly added, “That’s why OUR group drew lines on our paper to show that.”  I acknowledged how important it is to organize work and work precisely–but also let them students know that I had cut the paper and it was a tight fit!  When we were finished, I sent the groups back to make any last minute changes and to glue down their work.
So . . . all in all, I think it was a valuable experience.  Tomorrow I am giving an “entrance” slip asking students to write down three fractions that are close to 1/2, close to 1, and close to 1 1/2.  We’ll see how they do!
